GAY: The New "N" Word; Homosexuality & The Church

    in Religion

“I’m not gay no more” says 21-year old Andrew Caldwell, a young man that attended the annual COGIC Convocation this year. Some considered his confession a mockery of the Church; some said it was a show, while others considered it shameful. Although this event has gone viral and made numerous headlines with many views and hits including YouTube, I-tunes, Facebook, and Twitter, it has put the spotlight on the Black Church (not just a particular denomination) in its stance on where the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, and Queer's (LGBTQ) place is in our congregations.

Homosexuality has been the plight of the Black Church for years and is now being summons to give an account in answering the big question… What is the Church going to do about it?

Executive Director Will Batts of the Memphis Gay & Lesbian Community Center, in response to the controversy, stated that “every reputable scientific study says that you cannot change someone’s orientation”.  While adding to the debate of sexual orientation, Christopher Doyle, Director of the International Healing Foundation and person behind the anti-gay billboard advertisement (P-FOX-Parents & Friends of Ex-Gays/Gays) in Richmond, Virginia, believes that being gay is not a genetic predisposition but a choice and anyone can choose to change their lives.

Tonight on Truth Talk, follow the discussion as we talk about the plight of homosexuality and criticism in the Black Church.

Howard Richmond MD talks about self-care, anger and the rules

    in Self Help

Howard E Richmond MD is a transformational psychiatrist with a message for consciously seeking people who want to shift energy-draining reactions to realign body, mind and spirit. This episode is about the power of self-care when dealing with anger. He will also break down the concept of "The Rules" and discuss whose rules are running our lives and how to get back into joy.

One of the lessons Dr. Richmond has learned over twenty years in private practice is the value of being “out of your mind” and into your heart. This philosophy is beautifully displayed in The Healing Field, his first novel. The Healing Field is a riveting account of the healing breakthrough that saved his patient’s life and transformed his own. The book chronicles the daring, out of the box healing journey with his anorexic patient “Lori,” who was determined to die. Between her desperation and his determination, they become locked in a battle for life that crosses conventional boundaries and reveals that healing and freedom come in surprising forms.

Dr. Richmond practices hot yoga daily in San Diego, California, where he lives with his wife, Elana, and their two German shepherd rescues, Jayde and Houdini. Read more at HowardRichmondMD.com

  • Critical Discourse – Black Men, the Mayor of NYC and the NYPD; Viva Cuba?

    in Current Events

The reverberations from the Richmond County Grand Jury’s decision not to indict Daniel Pantaleo, of the NYPD, continue to be felt.

While protests on behalf of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, have been largely peaceful, if not very inconveniencing for New Yorkers, there have been sporadic instances of violence,

During a protest on the Brooklyn Bridge last Saturday, two men, both white, one a college professor, allegedly triggered a melee and assaulted police.

In the meantime, the events and reactions from that fateful day has caused tension between Mayor DiBlasio and the head of the Patrolman’s Benevolent Association, Patrick Lynch, who has accused the mayor of making remarks that are disrespectful of the police.

In fact, some of the NYPD have supported a pledge to disinvite the Mayor to their funerals.

On the international front, Barack Obama has decided to establish diplomatic and economic relations with Cuba, citing that the embargo, in place since 1961, has “not worked”.

Again, as expected, the reactions vary, with intense criticism from Sens. Marco Rubio Robert Menendez, both of whom are of Cuban heritage.

On the other hand, Jimmy Carter praised Obama’s “political courage”. Perhaps he sees this as a sort of redemption from the Mariel Boatlift?

I wonder out loud, what this means for black people economically, with an anticipated influx of Cubans to this country, just 90 miles away.

For those old enough to remember, this conjures memories of the Bay of Pigs (1961) and Cuban Missile Crisis (1962).

By the WAY, Obama says that black people are “better off” (HE said it, NOT me!)

So be prepared to discuss these pointed issues on the Critical Discourse University of the Blogosphere.
