Metalsmith Benchtalk with Reba Engel, Maker of Modern Jewelry

    in Art

Our guest on Metalsmith Benchtalk on Thursday, September 18th, 2014 at 3:00 PDT/ 6:00 EDT is Reba Engel, jewelry designer, metalsmith and former student of Jay Whaley!

We encourage you to participate in this live interview by logging into the chatroom or sending a message to Whaley Studio's Facebook Page.

About Reba: “Little did I know that my first jewelry project as a child, assembling broken pieces of my mother’s costume jewelry from a shoebox, would inspire a career! A high school class taught me the fundamentals of fabricating jewelry and I was hooked."

This passion for jewelry led to my first bold collection in 1999 — clearly an expression of my Bachelors in Applied Arts and a career in architectural design. These engineered pieces were cut out by my computer drawings and a water-jet system; a nontraditional metalsmithing process suggested to me by my college jewelry professor, Arline Fisch. As I construct the cast originals, I modify the technological feeling of the forms with hand applied finishes.

Over the years, my work has remained modern yet it has evolved with more fabricated designs and custom cut gemstones. My first job introduced me to the fashion industry where I spent several years and influenced my love for textiles, sewing, embroidery and hand painting fabric. From that inspiration, I developed a needlework series where I crochet chain and weave precious beads onto chain to drape like fabric as well as etch patterns onto metal in relief.

Teaching And Healing Families Through Music: Can Creative Arts Stop Violence?

    in Women

"Music soothes the savage beast" so the saying goes. Many outdoor, free concerts have quelled urban violence and unrest. A song can express deep pain and allow us to blow off steam. There is a lot of pent up frustration among youth, and it is unfortunately acted out in violence towards one another. This Friday, a panel of experts will take a look at the healing power of music as a peaceful solution to the crisis of violence in our homes, schools, and streets. There is a natural way to bring peace, without police, guns, or jail cells. Youth advocate Reba Brown discusses the upcoming program and how we can employ a nonviolent solution to the crisis of violence. Lawton Avery Merritt, author of Lil' Johnnie On The Block, discusses how to help young people recognize how they are being negatively influenced by the music they hear. Therapist Howard Williams looks at the psychological impact of today's music.

    Interview with Victoria Banks

    in Music

Life is painful and impossible and breathtaking and beautiful. I have to write what I feel.

That’s where Victoria Banks' third album Indigo comes from. "These songs aren’t written to fit a genre, or to meet an expectation of a sound,” she says. “They’re built from bare-bones midnight recording sessions in my attic. They’re things that I need to say."

Victoria’s list of accolades as an artist is long. Her self-produced, self-penned records When You Can Fly and Never Be the Same made her 2009’s most nominated female artist in Canadian country music, earned her the 2010 CCMA Female Artist of the Year award, and sent her out on tour with superstars Reba McEntire, Wynonna Judd, Lonestar, Randy Travis and Johnny Reid.

Now a staff songwriter at Nashville’s RareSpark Media Group, Victoria’s impressive catalogue of hits includes 3 cuts by Sara Evans including “Can’t Stop Loving You” (a duet with Isaac Slade of The Fray), and the ASCAP and SOCAN-award-winning “Saints & Angels.” She penned Jessica Simpson’s Billboard record-breaking country debut “Come On Over,” X Factor winner Tate Stevens' “Ordinary Angels,” One More Girl’s breakout hit “When It Ain’t Raining,” Doc Walker’s chart-topping “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” and Johnny Reid’s smash “Dance With Me,” for which Victoria was named 2010 CCMA Songwriter of the Year.
