Pushing Kids Towards Success vs. Pushing Them Out of School

    in Legal

The “school-to-prison pipeline” refers to the policies and practices that push children, especially our most at-risk children, out of classrooms and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. This practice has been fueled by zero tolerance policies, the presence of police officers in schools, and under-resourced academic settings. These excessive practices have resulted in the suspensions, expulsions, and arrests of of millions of public school students, especially students with histories of abuse and neglect, those who are poor, students of color, those with disabilities or who identify as LGBT. The interruption of education is detrimental for long-term success. It is costing the success of future generations and our communities.  On this episode of Spotlight on Youth, guests will discuss this alarming national trend, why it is harmful, and what jurisdictions are doing to address it.

    Guests:
Rebecca Ballard DiLoreto, Kentucky Litigation & Policy Director, Children’s Law Center, Inc.
Dennis Parker, Director, Racial Justice Program, American Civil Liberties Union
Brea L. Perry, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Indiana University

The ANDREA SHEA KING SHOW - Larry Pratt, Gun Owners of America

    in Politics Conservative

Gun Owners of America spearheaded a coalition of almost 30 groups this week and sent a letter to U.S. Senators opposing the confirmation of Loretta Lynch to be Attorney General of the United States.

While GOA has been busy coalescing grassroots opposition against the anti-gun nominee, the battle is far from over.

The vote on her nomination could occur as early as next week.  And right now, the Republican Senate holds “all the cards” in the fight to stop her nomination.  If they hold together, her nomination will be defeated.

And, well it should be.  Lynch has said under oath that she effectively intends to spit on the Constitution -- and continue to implement Obama’s unconstitutional, unlawful and anti-gun executive actions.

Next to Obama himself, Loretta Lynch will be the most important “Lynch-pin” in the administration's efforts to permanently obliterate the Constitution.  Without the active support of the Attorney General -- who, traditionally, has been the servant of the law, and not the lawless president -- Obama's fraud scheme collapses.

Joining me this morning is Larry Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Owners of America for over 30 years. GOA is a national membership organization of 300,000 Americans dedicated to promoting their Second Amendment freedom to keep and bear arms.

    Olaf Tryggvesson

    in Religion

Rebroadcast of the long running radio program, "The Ave Maria Hour", a presentation of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. www.AtonementFriars.org

Olaf Tryggvesson - (born c. 964—died c. 1000), Viking king of Norway (995–c. 1000), much celebrated in Scandinavian literature, who made the first effective effort to Christianize Norway.

Already a Christian, Olaf was confirmed at Andover (in modern Hampshire) in 994, with Ethelred, with whom he had been reconciled, as his godfather. Learning of the growing revolt against the Norwegian king Haakon the Great, Olaf returned to Norway and was accepted as king on Haakon’s death in 995. He forcefully imposed Christianity on the areas under his control, the coast and the western islands, but had little influence elsewhere. By commissioning missionaries and baptizing visiting dignitaries, Olaf was able to introduce Christianity to the Shetland, Faroe, and Orkney islands and to Iceland and Greenland. (Christianity was adopted by the Icelandic parliament [Althing] about 1000).

Olaf met his death in the Battle of Svolder (c. 1000) at the hands of the Danish king Sweyn I, the Swedish king Olaf Skötkonung, and Eric the Norwegian, earl of Lade.
