On the average those convicted of sexually abusing a child serve less than a year of jail time and 32% to 46% serve no jail time at all.One in four girls and one in six boys are victims of child sexual abuse. There are over forty-two million survivors of child sexual abuse in the world today. According to a Centers for Disease Control study, the lifetime costs for the victims of child sexual abuse reported in one year is $124 billion
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reports that there are currently 617,000 registered sex offenders in the United States, and typically 100,000 of those are unaccounted for. Other pedophiles are not on records or in databases. Pedophiles like Jerry Sandusky walk silently among us, and Sandusky showed us just how well they can disguise themselves.
Jerome Elam is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a survivor of child abuse, child sex trafficking and child ography. He is also the child of an alcoholic and child survivor of domestic violence as well as a child of divorce. Jerome has struggled against many things in his life and somehow has found a way to survive. Writing is his passion and it keeps him in touch with the wealth everyone holds deep inside their hearts and minds. Jerome shares his experiences in the hope that those suffering in silence will find the courage to speak out and share their voices. Youth violence is a public health issue impacting individual youth as well as entire communities. Homicide is the third leading cause of death for young people in our country. In response, some communities are working to reduce the incidents of youth violence and help kids reach their economic, educational, and vocational potential. There are several national projects that are assisting communities examine and address youth violence including, the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention and the Urban Network to Increase Thriving Youth (UNITY). On this episode of Spotlight on Youth, guests will discuss the goals and outcomes of youth violence prevention, the collaboration, strategic planning, and evidence-based programs used to support prevention planning, and provide guidance to other communities interested in integration of violence prevention into public health efforts.
