Carolina Clay - The Story of Dave with Leonard Todd

    in History

Leonard Todd is the author of CAROLINA CLAY, the story of the slave potter known as Dave. Newsweek calls it “a fascinating account.” Publishers Weekly describes it as “a sweeping tale of the South itself.” It was a finalist for The National Award for Arts Writing, and it won the South Carolina Center for the Book Award for Writing. It is published by W. W. Norton.

Born in South Carolina, Leonard was educated at Yale University. He is a former Fulbright Scholar to France. He lived for many years in New York City, where he began his writing career with travel articles, short stories, and novels for young adults. Two of his novels, set in areas of the South that he knew well as a boy, were optioned for film productions.

Author Leonard Todd will be talking with us about the great ceramic artisan known as “Dave,” who lived in South Carolina during the 19th century. He was a potter, a poet, and a slave.

For many years, very few details were known about this enigmatic man. Leonard, however, discovered a startling personal link to him and set out to uncover his story. The prize-winning book, CAROLINA CLAY, is the result.

Leonard now lives with his wife, a poet, in Edgefield, South Carolina, where he recently wrote the book, lyrics, and music for his first theatrical musical, SUNNY DAY, which had its premiere at the Edgefield County Theatre Company.

Leonard has told Dave’s story to audiences at the Smithsonian, at Oxford, on National Public Radio, and today he will be telling it to us.

Back II Basic Episode 472 : Commenting on the news stories of the day!!!

    in Politics Conservative

Super Bowl 50 is in the books, and if you like D-FENCE, this was a good Super Bowl. It came down to who made the least mistakes, and that was the Denver Broncos. Congratulations to the Broncos!

Has anyone seen a debate yet this season? I mean I have watched what they call a debate, however, I have not seen one debate yet! It seems like all the questions asked are geared to create controversy, or go over policy points that will make the candidates argue among themselves!

A real debate would ask a series of questions that each candidate has to answer. All candidates are ask to answer the same question. We will never know what the candidates stand for if they keep getting gotcha questions from the moderators!

Has anyone seen my Republic? Why are the American people so timid about getting politics right? We have a constitution we can refer to when we have questions about whether the government is doing it job right. Why is the public at large so lazy, that they can't be bothered with guiding their stewards constitutionally? Freedom and Liberty are not free and it take work to keep them!

    New Hampshire now up!

    in Politics

Good evening, tomorrow morning on The Meter we will cover the upcoming primary in New Hampshire. In the Republican 7 field, Businessman Donald Trump has a sizable lead and Berine Sanders leads Hillary Clinton by a wide margin in the 2 person democrat contest. Both parties held their respective debates this week in the lead up to the nations first primary. Wall Street was highlighted amongst the democrats as Sanders hammered Clinton on her ties to Goldman Sachs. Clinton claims she is the true progressive while Sanders says that title belongs to him. Who do you think is the top Progressive? The Republican 7 had their fair share of fireworks as Christie says Rubio is too inexperienced to be Commander and Chief and Carson critized Cruz for "dirty tricks" in Iowa. Tortue made its way into the Republican 7 as Cruz said waterboarding isn't torture while Trump says he'll "bring back a hell of a lot worse that waterboarding". In other news Barack Obama paired a visit to a mosque in Baltimore admits controversy as that mosque has known ties to terrorism. Was this a smart move by the president? Please join us at 9:00 AM. The call in number is 347-308-8933. Your input is essential. www.blogtalkradio.com/themete

Trucking Open Forum- Blocking Fair Wages for Truckers

    in Current Events

Just as the Denham Amendment attempted, but failed, to prevent Fair wages for truckers in last years Highway Bill known as the FAST ACT, once again the large motor carriers (ATA) have managed to slip in the same exact provision into H.R. 4441, the Aviation Innovation, Reform, and Reauthorization Act, otherwise known as the FAA Reauthorization Bill.

The Act was introduced by the House of Representatives. The “AIRR” Act as it is called, is a bill designed to authorize aviation programs, but on pp 256-258, Title VI, Sec 611, labeled Federal Authority, the attack on driver wages was slipped in by these members of the U.S House of Transportation Committee.

Listen to our last show explaining the dangers of the Denham Amendment and read more via OOIDA's Fighting for Truckers page.

We believe this attack on wages exploits new CDL drivers. Attorney Christina Humphrey is our guest who will discuss Section A and B of the provisions within the FAA Reauthorization Bill.
