The Federal Reserve Act (enacted December 23, 1913 signed into law by president Woodrow Wilson) was purportedly designed to aid in:
1. Conducting the nation’s monetary policy by influencing monetary and credit conditions in the economy in pursuit of maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates.
2. Supervising and regulating banking institutions to ensure the safety and soundness of the nation’s banking and financial system, and protect the credit rights of consumers.
3. Maintaining stability of the financial system and containing systemic risk that may arise in financial markets.
4. Providing financial services to depository institutions, the U.S. government, and foreign official institutions, including playing a major role in operating the nation’s payments system.
The Origins of Fractional Reserve Banking
In XVIth century England people who had gold would deposit it with goldsmiths for safekeeping. In exchange they got a signed receipt guaranteeing that they could retrieve it. The value assigned to that note backed by the gold in the goldsmith’s vault made it possible to use it for payment.
That means if A deposited £10 worth of gold and had in his possession a receipt he could settle his debt with it. That receipt, actually a promissory note, became money. The person who took it in payment could either use it as is, or at some later point retrieve the gold in the goldsmith’s keeping.
At the same time B borrows £10 worth of gold from the goldsmith but receives a promissory note. He settles his debt to C with that note. Now there are two notes in circulation for one amount of gold. The goldsmith issues further notes, knowing that all claims would not have to be honored at the same time.

THE GOLDWATER INSTITUTE on EDUCATION REFORM
Ed Director Jonathan Butcher returns. about involvement of and with state legislatures, funding and education savings accounts. Always enjoyable and provocative, Jonathan brings greats points of view to the audience.
We collected our amazing antibiotic plant on the shores of Lake Mbezi and are scartching our heads, trying to figure out the best way to get this plant into a form that can save the lives of folks with antibiotic-resistant diseases.
But back up, just because we saw miraculous healing, how do we know it has antibiotic properties? And how do we know that the world needs another antibiotic? We visit the CDC, the world's best and biggest health accountant.
And then we headed north to the FDA, to find out how they make sure that plants can be used for treatment.
Would you like to take the course on training in regulatory writing? click here
Welcome to Part 1 of the Medical Writing Institute Spring 2015 Regulatory Documentation Certificate!
This is a course in 4 parts in which we are going on a journey, starting with a walk by Lake Mbezi which may, or may not, be on the continent of Africa. We are going through processes needed to turn a pretty plant with amazing antibiotic powers, into an antibiotic which will be sold by registered pharmacists to sick folks who have been given a prescription for it by a licensed healthcare professional.
To be awarded a certificate, you will need to show competency in understanding antibiotics: what they are, what they do, and all the ways humans can become resistant. You will also need to show competency in understanding the documents that are needed to take a plant from a tropical jungle to laboratory testing to giving to humans to making sure humans remain safe.
Theoretically, you could be ready for your exam in 4 weeks. If you have experience preparing documents for regulatory agencies, and have strong health and science backgrounds, you could be ready for your exam immediately. Your exam will be 2 parts: written documents and oral exam, which will be recorded and you can keep.
Please listen to the show, and get started on your journey with the tropical plant you found near Lake Mbezi.
Enjoy! If you don't like it, you can enroll in the Pharmaceutical Management Certificate, which is for medical writers who do not like regulatory writing. And for anyone looking for a career in the international pharmaceutical industry.
