Remember when the public school system used to be a place where we honored the flag, said the pledge, had prayer, were allowed to be little boys and litte girls; if a little boy did something to a littel girl she didn't like or thought was gross the little boy didn't have to worry about being arrested or expelled but he did have to worry about her brother giving him a good old-fishioned butt kicken after school. Remember when guns where kept in the basement of the school in the JROTC room and that's also where you learned to shoot? It is not yo mamma's public school system anymore!

Are you willing to put your life on the line for what you believe? Twelve advocates of supporting good neighborhood public schools have certainly done so. The Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, wants to close Dyett public school, strategically located in the Hyde Park area bordering the Bronzeville community, forcing families to have to travel miles away from home to reach a nearby public school. In Chicago, traveling to outside neighborhoods could be fatal, given the unchecked gang violence that cost so many lives last school year. The bottom line issue is always money. The Dyett High school building would serve those well who want to include it in a real estate deal as the city negotiates space in Hyde Park for the new Presidential library. And as for the safety and education of the children? The city has chosen to ignore an excellent plan for the reopening Dyett as a Dyett Global Leadership and Green Technology School. Mr. Jitu Brown and Dr. Ayesha Wade Bey join us to give an update on the hunger strike.
Why I Can't Teach in the Public School System Anymore
On August 12, the Washington Post shared educator Stephanie Keiles post about why she made what she called “one of the hardest decisions” of her life: to quit her job and start teaching at a private school. In that post, she explained why she felt like she has been driven out of public education. Her story resonated with many other teachers in public schools who are finding their jobs increasingly difficult because of school reforms that have limited teacher autonomy, over-emphasized standardized tests and underfunded public education.
Joining her will be Attorney Gerald Griggs. If you remember the Spring 2015 Atlanta GA teaching scandal where Atlanta Public Educators were given prison time for changing student’s test scores, Attorney Griggs started an organization called Free Our Teachers (FOT) Now (http://www.freeourteachersnow.com/) aimed at helping educators not just in Atlanta but everywhere. FOT’s primary focus is to support teachers that serve underprivileged communities. These teachers are faced with insurmountable obstacles – malnourished children, a lack of educational resources, and the absence of parental support and guidance – due to the low socioeconomic status of the community. When presented with these challenges, teachers must assume a myriad of roles that inhibit their ability to be effective teachers.
We have remained silent concerning the Atlanta Public School scandal so that "justice" could take its course. Now, that the "truth" has been revealed and several Atlanta public schools administrators and teachers were adjudged guilty by a jury of their peers and sentenced for racketeering convictions related to a massive standardized test cheating scandal, Attorney Sherri Jefferson will share her thoughts on the "Real Lesson to be Learned."
This episode will discuss how cheating adversely affects the lives of our children, the moral and legal issues of the jury decisions, the tactics that still exist at and through the Atlanta Public School that promotes the environment that is conducive to the conduct exhibited by their adminsitrators and teachers.
Attorney Jefferson will discuss how the jury verdict will not change the APS culture.
