NYS Governor Cuomo manipulated the state budget, holding up its passage, until it included the hugely unpopular and anti-worker practice of pegging teachers tenure and evaluations to standardized tests grade results. While dropped from inclusion in the budget the Governors desire to see the proliferation of charter schools remains a mainstay on his educational agenda. These issues have been been heating up ever since Pres. Bush s No Child Left Behind plan, but especially since the roll out of Race to The Top and the Common Core State Standards so Building Bridges decided to tackle these issues with with Diane Ravitch, who infuses research, about the recent history of education policy reform, the strategies used for fighting back against these policies, and who proposes solutions that work to create sustainable, equitable, anti-racist, democratic and meaningful public education. Our conversation with Diane Ravitch is for anyone interested in an insider s look and leading a resistance or forming an organization towards reclaiming our public schools and reclaiming the public narrative around education policy.
Last week the majority in the state legislature, under the leadership of Gov. Sam Brownback passed a new controversial law providing "block grant" funding to our public schools. The agenda has many critics, and may force a constitutional crisis in the supreme court. Later this week from March 28 - 30 people will be walking from Johnson County (NE Kansas) to the Topeka statehouse to raise awareness and promote participation of the public.
Information about this event is at Game on for Kansas Schools. Stay tuned to RFK for updates.

Program Summary 31 August 2014
This is a special program on the corporate attempt to take over and privatize our public schools with Charter Schools. The show will expose how the "reform" movement under Obama's "Race to the Top" is being used as a guise to bring about this privatization of our public schools. You'll learn how they're doing it, who's behind it and what you can do about it.
Hear journalist/blogger Jonathan Pelto and school counselor Christine Ladd about the privatization of our public schools which is being driven by government, corporations and billionaire foundations ( Gates, Broad & Walton foundations) They discuss the impact on schools, teachers and students and how it's being done. The methods used to turn our public schools over to private, for profit charter schools are Obama's Race to the Top, the Common Core State Standards and the tests that go along with them, and teacher evaluation based on these test scores. It's scandalous and being supported by both political parties. Jonathan Pelto's blog has a wealth of information about the privatization assault in Connecticut: www.jonathanpelto.org

Our Public Education is being destroyed. It's as simple as that. Common Core, Race to the Top, Charter School Disinformation and Money, Money, Money. In New York, a battle rages that dates back to misappropriation of Public School Funds, Cuomo trying to cut Public Education and give money to charter schools and, of course, Common Core. Created by businessmen and shoved down the throats of parents and teachers with a focus on testing, Common Core is the cherry on top of the continued push to turn Public Education into a business. Joining me today is Teacher/Activist Marla Kilfoyle. Marla, a manager of Badass Teacher Association has been a parent advocate on Long Island in such groups as Parents and Teachers Against Common Core and LI Opt-Out. Marla has been a teacher in the Social Studies Department at Oceanside High School (NY) for 27 years. Also joining us Kenneth Hughes, public school teacher for 28 years who is watching the school where he teaches suffer from the budget shortfalls manipulated over the past decade and is looking more budget cuts direct in the face. These issues in New York and throughout the country are as important as any in our society. So grab a cup of coffee and join us. Longtime Activist, Coffee Party USA Board of Director & Radio Host, Bobby Rodrigo's show "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio airs Sunday Morning at 8:30AM. Advocating engagement Bobby points out the Constitution is the Rule of Law and why it should remain so. Money in Politics, the Political Party Machine and partisan blind allegiance is on full display as he advocates against the erosion of Constitutional Protections in the name of corruption & tyranny. "If we focused on following the Constitution we would solve many of the ills of our society.”
GRUMPy member Marj Passman will join BustED Pencils to discuss their latest opinion piece and talk about why ALL citizens must engage the Wisconsin attack on democracy. Plus Trending News and of course the BustED Pencils "tool of the week."
Controversial, thought-provoking debates, lectures and authors going beyond the Sunday sport spectacles and religious services.
