Mike Lawing attended the Ninth European Kidney Cancer Symposium in Dublin last April, and has carefully crafted an excellent report to share that meeting with all the patients and family members who wished they could be there.
As usual, he has done an outstanding job.
In this interview, Mike and Joyce speak about this conference with Robin Martinez, moderator of the patient support conversation at Smart Patients, the successor to the ACOR "KidneyOnc" list. See http://www.smartpatients.com Participants were asked to submit questions in advance to Robin or to Powerful Patient.
In the conversation you will hear references to the following drugs:
A critical look and challenge of the unproven theories, discredited research claims, fabrications, manipulations, and unfulfilled predictions surrounding the HIV = AIDS hypothesis.
After 30 years, the virus named HIV has not been proven to cause AIDS.
The evidence that a virus claimed to be HIV even exists is based on evidence that some scietists argue is insufficient.
Some scientists who acknowledge that a new retrovirus had been discovered in 1984 nevertheless are not convinced that it causes AIDS or any other adverse health effect.
There is no test for HIV that provides a reliable result for infection. In practice, diagnoses of HIV infection (HIV+) are made by assuming that two unreliable results add up to a reliable result. The truth is, that's the best they can do.
HIV infection and AIDS are treated using a mixture or cocktail of drugs of two types: nucleoside analogs and protease inhibitors. Both are toxic and eventually cause iatrogenic disease. Nucleoside analogs, such as AZT, can create AIDS symptoms. AZT has been referred to as "AIDS by prescription" by Professor Peter Duesberg, a prominent virologist from University of California-Berkeley.
Think of HIV tests and AIDS defining conditions as vehicles to entrap people into becoming lifelong pharmaceutical clients. The tab is paid with tax dollars, but people are still needed to swallow the obscenely overpriced poison pills.
Gay men, i.v. drug users, young people, pregnant women, African Americans, and the Hip Hop community are among the groups specifically targeted in campaigns urging people to "get tested."

Many important medications available today have been developed with public dollars and yet are costly to patients. The government, especially through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has funded many seminal research directly contributing to the discovery of transformative medicines. Congress enacted the Bayh-Dole Act in 1980 which allowed universities to patent the results of federally funded research and then license these patents to commercial entities. In 2013, Senator Patrick Leahy asked the NIH to expand the availability of Myriad’s genetic tests to identify BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 which predict high risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The essential discoveries that made the test possible were developed with government funding and that the cost of the test ($3000) is unaffordable for millions of women; the request was denied.
Undifferentiated stem cell separation technology used in bone marrow transplants was heavily supported by NIH funding, however, the procedure is extremely costly to the patient and unaffordable for patients without insurance.
The retroviral drug, ritonavir- a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) protease inhibitor was developed with government funding to Abbott Laboratories and Columbia University. This is a major medicine for the treatment of HIV, but its pharmaceutical cost in America is 4 to 5 times higher than the same drug in other countries.
Recently, patients with Fabry disease requested an open license for an enzyme replacement therapy developed with government funding at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and licensed to Genzyme. The NIH rejected the petition.

Sean Strub became a pivotal force in AIDS activism through the fiery ACT UP (The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), raising crucial funding for—and participating in—many of their most notorious and effective demonstrations. He would become, in 1990, the first openly HIV-positive person to run for the U.S. Congress, and later become founder, publisher, and executive editor of the groundbreaking POZ magazine. BODY COUNTS documents the author’s own near-death struggle with AIDS and his Lazarus-like recovery in the mid-1990s after the discovery of game-changing protease inhibitor therapy.
At the frontlines of the AIDS epidemic since its earliest days, Strub shares his personal journey and dramatic evolution. His take-no-prisoners account names names. The author identifies the villains and hypocrites who thrived during this era, and acknowledges heroes who battled public apathy to bring the AIDS epidemic to the forefront. The author spares nobody in his assessment, offering a candid critique of where America fell short in its vision for ending the epidemic, including the responses by government, the gay community itself and the “AIDS, Inc.” infrastructure that has emerged over the past 30 years.
