The Life & Motivation of Lawrence "Larry" Watson, as he celebrates thirty years of performing throughout the New England areas and around the world. Watson spent last Christmas in Asia delivering his own special brand of holiday music to the people of Singapore and Malaysia. On a return engagement to Asia he visited Shanghai China, where he wowed the Chinese people as lead male vocalist in a concert entitled “The American Songbook.”
Watson a soulful messenger—a modern-day Paul Robeson is currently a Professor of Ensembles in the Performance Division at Berklee College of Music. He has been a member of the Voice Department since 1994 and is the Resident Artist at the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at the Harvard Law School. His two CD ‘s “The Journey,” and “American Fruit with African Roots” are available on line. Founder, President and Artistic Director of SaveOurSelves Productions and Consulting, Watson remains committed to the preservation and performance of African descent musical expression. Watson is currently a Professor at Berklee College of Music. On the last episode of Spartan Life Radio, we talked about the stupendous Black History Month (BMH) 2016 observance taking place at Norfolk State University. In this episode, we tracked down several faculty members who have created unique and interesting programming for this year's observance. Did you know that there's a connection between the famous Buffalo Soldiers of Virginia's history and the Philippines? We're going to talk to NSU's Dr. April T. Manalang, assistant professor in the Department of History and Interdisciplinary Studies, about her research into this "hidden" Virginia History and the program she's created for the Black History Month Celebration. Professor Anthony Stockard, director of the NSU Theatre Company, will discuss the encore performance of the award-winning play "The Brothers Size." The drama has won several awards and was recently presented at the Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival. "The Brothers Size" was also presented at last year's National Black Theatre Festival making it the most-awarded production in Norfolk State University history! And, last but certainly not least, Professor Carol Pretlow, NSU's resident political guru, who will round out our panel will discuss a BHM program involving students from the political science department. African American Perspectives on International Politics and Foreign Policy is a panel discussion on the topic from the student perspective.

Barbara Occhino co-founded Vertex Marketing Communications (VertexMarketing.com) with her husband, Ronald, two weeks after being married in 1982 – knocking on doors with only $30 in the bank. Since then the full service advertising and marketing agency has won several national awards and has been certified by the Connecticut Department of Administrative Services as a set-aside, Hispanic woman-owned Small and Minority Business Enterprise with a state media contract.
Outside of work, Barbara is a Music and Entertainment Curator for the Stamford ARTWALK festivals, the Annual Greenwich Holiday Stroll, and church events. She had put aside music and performing for 28 years while building her business and raising her two daughters, Christine and Lisa, both whom earned scholarships to the Berklee College of Music and currently run their own music businesses. Barbara now manages Barbara’s Serenade (BarbaraEntertains.com) bands and is involved in theatre, dance, and choral groups.

James Lee Burke was born in Houston, Texas, in 1936 and grew up on the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast. He attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute and later received a B. A. Degree in English and an M. A. from the University of Missouri in 1958 and 1960 respectively. Over the years he worked as a landman for Sinclair Oil Company, pipeliner, land surveyor, newspaper reporter, college English professor, social worker on Skid Row in Los Angeles, clerk for the Louisiana Employment Service, and instructor in the U. S. Job Corps. He and his wife Pearl met in graduate school and have been married 48 years. They have four children: Jim Jr., an assistant U.S. Attorney; Andree, a school psychologist; Pamala, a T. V. ad producer; and Alafair, a law professor and novelist who has 4 novels out with Henry Holt publishing.
Burke’s work has been awarded an Edgar twice for Best Crime Novel of the Year. He has also been a recipient of a Breadloaf and Guggenheim Fellowship and an NEA grant. Two of his novels,Heaven’s Prisoners and Two For Texas, have been made into motion pictures. His short stories have been published in The Atlantic Monthly, New Stories from the South, Best American Short Stories, Antioch Review, Southern Review, and The Kenyon Review. His novel The Lost Get-Back Boogie was rejected 111 times over a period of nine years, and upon publication by Louisiana State University press was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Today he and his wife live in Missoula, Montana, and New Iberia, Louisiana.

Gary Parker was born in Columbus, Georgia, and began training in Kodokan Judo as a high school student in 1984; after high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and was stationed at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa. Shortly after arrival in Okinawa, Parker enrolled in the Hamagawa Dojo, where he learned under the watchful eye of Takamiyagi Hiroshi, Hanshi – The founder of Goshukan-Ryu Karate. After separation from the Air Force, he was granted a visa and continued to live and train in Okinawa until 1996, when he moved back to his native Georgia in the United States. Parker received authorization to teach Goshukan-Ryu in America, and opened the first branch Okinawa Goshukan-Ryu Dojo outside of Okinawa in 1999.
As the senior American student of Takamiyagi Hiroshi, Mr. Parker serves as the North American Honbu-Cho/Director for Goshukan-Ryu Karate; he also hosts the annual Goshukan Gasshuku, and teaches at regional training camps and seminars as he works passionately to spread his teacher’s art and the values of Okinawan Karate and Wu Zhu Quan (Five Ancestor Kenpo).
He is the pioneer of Okinawa Goshukan-Ryu Karate in North America, and is the author of dozens of articles and has worked in both the Private Security industry, honing his skills in the tactical training field, in addition to being a small business owner, and a corporate trainer.
