Applied Improvisation and Product Design
Applying improvisation to communication, teamwork and leadership has received a lot of business press lately. Improvisation principles can also be used in marketing areas including product design and usability. Join me Oct 23rd when we chat to Jessie Shternshus, a fellow Applied Improv Network member, about how improv principles can improve design.
As the founder and owner of The IMPROV EFFECT, Jessie weds her lifelong passion for and expertise in applied improvisation with the fast paced demands of the corporate world. In her classes she helps people become better listeners, team players, leaders, and communicators. Her physically engaging and playful workshops are relevant to all fields of life; participants of her workshops vary from college professors to engineers and from web developers to lawyers. Jessie gained her formal education at USF and NYU. Throughout her career she has worked with Fortune 500 companies and companies such as CBS, Johnson & Johnson, Expedia, Getty Images and Celgene.

Product and Service Design and The Customer Experience
Great product and services design is about creating fantastic customer experiences. It's also about customer empathy, story, and understanding exactly how your product or service fits into your customers' lives. There are many ways to approach design. Where do you start? What factors are most important?
Join me Thursday, April 11, for a chat about product design, user needs, and innovation with one of my fave design pros, Mike Harding, an entrepreneur who never sleeps!
Mike Harding is a degenerate entrepreneur who has been plying his trade for almost 30 years. He is somewhat fickle which has led to a somewhat haphazard career inside the technology industry and a deep background in designing products and services. Presently Mike is experimenting with Oddyssea, an interactive retail shop that boasts a narwhal tusk, the ability to create terrariums, Zoltar the Fortune Teller, and a 3D printer. When not engaging in business, he likes to spend time with his family on the San Mateo County coast.
BUSINESS IS PURPOSE; THAT HAS PRINCIPLES; THAT'S BASED ON A PROCESS; PROCEDURE THAT DEVELOPS A PRODUCT THAT LEADS TO
A PROFIT; THAT RESULTS IN PEACE.
But the process is more important than the purpose.
Mention the word process to any launch team, and you are likely to hear: “Who needs processes? Don’t we have enough to deal with already with trying to get this product out the door, and now we have to create and follow some convoluted, bureaucratic process? By the time we do all of that paperwork to figure out the process and follow the process, the launch could be done!”
Whether you are part of a large launch team or a lonely entrepreneur launching your first product, having a simple process will, believe it or not, save you time and sanity in the long run. By its nature, launching is chaotic. Often, people don’t know where to start. Do I do market research first? When do I write marketing materials? Do I wait until the product completes the final testing? It seems as if everything happens at once.

[itvt] is pleased to present an audio recording of the TVOT NYC 2014 session, "The Refashioning of Pay-TV's Technology and Content Infrastructure." The session was described in the show brochure as follows:
"By most accounts, the past few months have been a rocky time for pay-TV: according to a recent report from Leichtman Research Group, for example, the 13 largest operators in the US (representing 95% of the market) lost 150,000 video subscribers in the third quarter, compared to 25,000 in the same period last year; and nary a day goes by without a story appearing in the business press about the 'decline' or even the 'demise' of pay-TV.
This session brings together representatives of some of the companies that are looking to help pay-TV arrest its video-subscriber losses and revitalize its technology and content infrastructure with innovative solutions that will enable it to adapt to a rapidly evolving video world. Panelists will articulate their visions of the future of pay-TV, and debate and discuss the respective roles that will be played in that future by such new technologies and phenomena as the cable Reference Design Kit (RDK), HTML5, the incorporation of broadband services and applications onto the pay-TV set-top box, the migration to IP, multiscreen delivery, the emergence of cloud-based content services, and more." Panelists included:
Steve Donohue, Editor-in-Chief, The Donohue Report (Moderator)
Mike Earle, CEO, aioTV
Fred Handsman, SVP of Strategic Planning and Business Development, Vubiquity
Michael Hawkey, SVP and GM, Sling Media
Tara Maitra, EVP and GM of Content and Media Sales, TiVo
Bernee Strom, Founder and Executive Chairman, WebTuner
Robin Wilson, VP of Business Development, NAGRA
