Woe be unto you writer, should you land in a Washington Post article titled “The five worst sentences I read in January.” When I read that post written by the new nonfiction book critic Carlos Lozada, I knew two things. First, I needed to interview Lozada. Second, I was afraid to write him an email.
Lozada’s voice engaged me because in addition to rhetorical smarts, he’s pretty funny. Though he’s been at the paper for several years, he began his new role at Book Party in January. I’m proud to announce the March 22 episode of Behind the Prose will feature an interview with Lozada. In classic Behind the Prose fashion, I’ll learn how he approaches his own writing craft and process and what it’s like to read and write for a living.
Besides the five worst sentences he read in January, we’ll discuss his Book Party posts including the hilarious book review “Reggie Love on life as Obama’s “chief of stuff” and the ballooning list of journalism cliches forbidden in the The Post’s Sunday Outlook section.
Oh, and if you do find yourself in one of Lozada’s worst sentences articles, don’t be upset. He just shames your offending sentence, not your entire book.
Unless, I suppose, it needed it.
Carlos Lozada is associate editor and nonfiction book critic at the Washington Post, where he has worked since 2005 in various capacities, including economics editor, national security editor and Outlook editor. Previously, he was managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine and a Knight-Bagehot fellow in economics and business journalism at Columbia University. A native of Lima, Peru, he is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Princeton University.
In this interview we'll be speaking with Jill R. Baron, MD, a NYC based holistic, integrative physician about "Getting to the heart of the matter: mind, body, and spirit." Dr. Baron will review what she feels are the keys to optimal health and well-being, and teach tools that you can use right away to help decrease stress and inflammation.
Tune in to hear Dr. Baron, who is one of a small group of physicians now certified in Functional Medicine, as well as board certified in Family Medicine, and Integrative Holistic Medicine. Dr. Baron is also a graduate of Princeton University and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The Virgin Islands Literary Festival and Book Fair will feature several events highlighting the historic Crucian writer and activist, Hubert Harrison, the weekend of March 26-29. Saturday evening, March 28th, there will be a performance of David Edgecombe’s play Hubert Harrison.
Today we meet two gentlemen who diligently worked to bring the biography of a forgotten Virgin Islander to the forefront. One, an author, the other, a playwright, but they both wrote about Crucian-born Hubert Harrison,
Dr. David Edgecombe, writer, director, instructor, and playwright has worked at the University of the Virgin Islands from 1990 to present. Upon returning to the Islands, David joined the faculty at the University of the Virgin Islands and became their artist-in-residence, premièring his play, Heaven.
Dr. Jeffrey Perry, formally educated at Princeton, Harvard, Rutgers, and Columbia, preserved and inventoried the Hubert H. Harrison Papers and helped to place them at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Columbia University and to develop the Hubert H. Harrison Papers, 1893-1927: Finding Aid. He is the editor of A Hubert Harrison Reader (Wesleyan University Press, 2001) and the forthcoming Writings of Hubert Harrison.
Dr. Perry will deliver a keynote address and a presentation discussing his work uncovering Harrison’s writings and documenting his story and work in Perry’s book, Hubert Harrison: The Voice of Harlem Radicalism, 1883-1918 (Columbia University Press).

Death and rebirth lie at the core of Christian theology. Therefore, they color much of our understanding (and misunderstanding) of God and God’s relationship to humankind. Come join us for a lively discussion of this topic, which becomes especially relevant as we approach the twin holidays of Passover and Easter—each of which deals with this theme in its own unique way.
These segments are presented in Virtual Class format. Listeners are invited to call in with their questions in the 2nd half of the show.
