Jennifer Biang is a Parent Support Specialist for Learning Ally. She lives in California and is the founding member of Decoding Dyslexia CA. She is also on the board of her local IDA and is married and has two children. When she found out her daughter was dyslexic, she was surprised that there were no services available to teach her how to read. Back in the early 70’s Jennifer was taught to read with a special program, it worked so well that she never realized she had a problem. It was hard to believe that these services were not available for her daughter. Once she learned more about neurodiversity she realized over half of the people in her family had alternative wiring. The biggest surprise was, she too is dyslexic.
Deborah Lynam is currently the Director of Parent Community Engagement at Learning Ally. She is a newly appointed member of NJ DOE's State Special Education Advisory Council. For those who don't know it, gang life is not a thing of the past..
There are many risks associated with gang membership including exposure to violent crime, and possible incarceration. Why are so many adolescents willing to join? Several risk factors have been identified that increase the likelihood that a teen will join a gang including the presence of gangs in the neighborhood, having gang members in the family already, histories of sexual or physical abuse, growing up in poverty, having access to weapons and drugs, and a lack of success in other areas of life, such as school. Having identified these risk factors, experts propose that young adults join gangs because they both act as a surrogate family, as well as provide a sense of belonging, power, control and prestige.
ISIS fighters have pushed to the edge of Kobani and evade U.S. airstrikes, says spokesman for Kurdish fighters; ISIS may be on the verge of taking the besieged Syrian city; Hell hath no fury like a Kurd betrayed; Our “ally” Turkey supports jihadists while joining the U.S.-led coalition against them; "Compared with President Barack Obama, even Jimmy Carter is John McCain"; but has the Islamic State's beheading spree achieved what all the warnings from conservatives never could?
As followers of Christ we will be tested and tempted to long for what the world offers. Materialism, wealth, prominence, prestige and the idea that if it feels good do it. So how can we develop a greater desire for the things of God more? What is it that is standing in the way between me and my relationship with God? This is no doubt a constant and on-going battle because we must deny and crucify the flesh and its wants and desires and seek the abundant life that is offered by God to all who choose this path. But no, its not easy....but it is where we experience a greater peace, joy, and contentment when we have more of a desire for Christ. We need to ask ourselves daily if we are being driven by our fleshly desires or the Holy Spirit?

Where do you begin when you try to analyze all the issues going on in the world today? Inequality of every kind (Financial, educational, racial, gender ) is rampant, escalating violence, and perpetual war all plague mankind. We are inundated with negative imagery and rhetoric reinforcing ideas that keep us from discussing and solving the issues that keep us divided. Often times these issues are manufactured or made to seem more important than they really are, the time we waste arguing and hurting each other would be better spent talking to and learning about each other, what better way to get to the root of our issues. Undoubtedly we would discover that we are all much more alike than we are different. Our age old prejudices now have a new high tech ally, the digital age has brought much progress but it has also created a digital divide that is rapidly making this a very impersonal world. Talking has been replaced by texting, love letters by email, and date night is now Skype Night. Can’t we all just talk face to face?
