On this show we are discussing “The U.S. Presidents and Slavery”. This is a good time for this discussion since "Presidents Day" just passed.
“Schools across the country are adorned with posters of the 44 U.S. presidents, children’s books put students on a first-name basis with the presidents, and U.S. history textbooks describe the accomplishments and challenges of the major presidential administrations.
“But while these books engage students and readers with stories of the presidents’ accomplishments and challenges, stories of their dogs in the Rose Garden or childhood escapades, there is no mention that more than 1-in-4 U.S. presidents were involved in human trafficking and slavery. These presidents bought, sold and bred enslaved people for profit. Of the 12 presidents who were enslavers, more than half kept people in bondage at the White House.”
Jay and Matt sweep up the broken pieces of the pathetic men who bought overpriced crap and the pathetic women who were “under-appreciated” and/or had their hearts broken on Valentine’s Day. They also spend time feigning outrage and overtly mocking the nationwide cinematic opening of Fifty Shades of Grey. But wait, there’s MORE!!
Presidents’ Day is upon us and it is incumbent upon the IWS staff to make fun of each and every Oval Office inhabitant that has ever tried to govern this great nation. If that isn’t enough, IWS Radio drinks in the debauchery of Mardi Gras and talks of repentance with the arrival of Lent. Jay and Matt will also talk candidly and openly about the moral and ethical question facing us today…
Should Jay and Matt begin to post pictures of fully-exposed boobs and bare-naked booties upon the IWS Radio website? All of that plus your phone calls at 661.244.9852 as IWS Radio celebrates Pathetic People, Presidents, and Boobies!!
Venita and her husband, Duwayne, own C & J Trophy & Engraving, a family business. The couple makes it work by setting serious boundaries. Nestled between the University of Memphis campus and the Orange Mound Community, one of the largest and oldest black neighborhoods in the country. They purchased the business and property had been in business for over 30 years. The startup risk was low, but the stakes were high since they knew nothing about the awards and recognition industry. For the first few years, The Smiths didn’t change a thing. Fortunately, Venita had experience in retail and operations management and her husband had background in color proofing and lithographic photography, so they threw caution to the wind and went for it. And, eight years later, the rest is history.
Her first job, was at the Memphis in May International Festival as Secretary. That position would lead becoming its Operations Director for 10 years. That led her to become the Director of Operations at the National Civil Rights Museum. During her 16-year tenure, she assisted with two renovation projects and two expansion projects all while managing the day-to-day operations of the 40,000 square foot facility, 13 full time staff members, security, housekeeping and IT contractors. Venita retired in 2014 to focus more on the family business.
With her father owning a shoe repair business for over 30 years and her mother, who was a beautician and owned her own salon, Venita was destined to become an entrepreneur. Venita watched her parents as they worked together like hand and glove to provide a comfortable lifestyle for her family. They managed to work together as a team, like she and her husband Duwayne. Venita is the brain and Duwayne is the brawn.
