THE SPACE BETWEEN~
As a bereavement care specialist, Dr. Virginia Simpson has devoted her career to counseling individuals and families grappling with illness, death, and grieving. But when her own mother, Ruth, is diagnosed in 1999 with a life-threatening condition, Virginia is caught off guard by the storm of emotions she experiences when she is forced to inhabit the role of caregiver.
In a quest to provide her mother with the best care possible, Virginia arranges for Ruth to move in with her—and for the next six years, she cares for her, juggling her mother’s doctor’s appointments, meals, medication schedules, transportation needs, and often cranky moods with her own busy schedule. In The Space Between, Simpson takes readers along for the journey as she struggles to bridge the invisible, often prickly space that sits between so many mothers and daughters, and to give voice to the challenges, emotions, and thoughts many caregivers experience but are too ashamed to admit. Touching and vividly human, The Space Betweenreminds us all that without accepting the inevitability of death and looking ahead to it with clarity, life cannot be fully lived.
While Alan Dershowitz, a member of O.J. Simpson’s “dream team” calls the acclaimed mini-series, American Crime Story The People vs. O. J. Simpson “a total fabrication,” the show has re-ignited interest in the so-called “Trial of the Century” twenty plus years after the spectacle. Top LA. attorney David Diamond returns to help Amy Beth dissect fact from fiction, and we examine the way the high-profile trial and its controversial verdict forever altered trial coverage and America’s fascination with the justice system. And is there a correlation between the trial’s riveting coverage and the advent of Reality TV, which is set to anoint Sarah Palin the next Judge Judy, despite the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate’s lack of legal education?

By the time this article is published the People’s National Party (PNP) might have decided to participate in the national debates leading up to the general election. Even if they do at the last minute, their stubborn refusal to participate and the spurious reasons given for not doing so are regrettable and an insult to the democratic principles enshrined in the party’s founding. Norman Manley and even Michael must be spinning in their graves at what the party has become. Under no circumstance would either man have refused a debate. They would have welcomed the opportunity to take on their opponents; for they knew they would have proved themselves a worthy match to any. But these are different times when the party is governed by feckless leadership and when the party has degenerated into a mere election-winning machine, devoid of any deep philosophical construct of the kind that made it a respectable political party in Jamaica and the Caribbean. This present refusal to participate is made the more regrettable by the whimsical and outright disingenuous reasons that are being offered. In one instance we are told that the refusal is based on contemptuous remarks made by the Leader of the Opposition Andrew Holness about Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.
Authors Darlington Johnson and Stephanie Simpson have noticed many children reacting with their emotions first, and then there are the consequences for their reactions. They decided to write a children’s book to encourage children to try to think out the situation thoroughly before reacting, and using the character Layla the Ladybug to help demonstrate how to handle a dilemma. Layla didn’t react to her emotions; instead she found a way to fix the problem and have a better outcome.
