We have a moral dilemma in this country coming from both major political parties. How can Christian Republicans despise the poor and Christian Democrats hail the LGBT community? Especially since the Biblical narrative runs contrary to both platforms. Perhaps we need to start fresh and develop a new political party that would be the Christian alternative for all ethnic Christians. A house divided against itself cannot and or will not stand. Let the Church say AMEN
Sometimes winners may quit and quitters may win. How do you know what to quit and when to quit. Today, we have Brandon Langer, Global Vice President for Symmetry Corporation. Brandon will address the issue of what to quit and when to quit.
All quiting is not the same. It is different for every individual and for every situation. There are some good reasons to quit, some bad and some knee-jerk reactions. Sometimes when you quit something, a door opens for something much better.
It might take a mentor, a role model or a coach to help you make the decision about something that is very important to you. The important thing is to keep going, whether on the same path or a new one. This program will give you some insight.
Hardship—the Great Life Equalizer
Research shows the following information;
Hardship affects the wealthy and the poor; the young and the old; the corporate CEO and the teacher in a one-room school. “The human condition guarantees that each life will encounter natural and largely unpredictable trauma. . . . Leadership, by its very nature, is entwined with adversity” (Stoner & Gilligan, 2002, p.17).
Given this sober dose of reality, the question that begs to be answered is this: How do human beings face hardship and how do they turn an adverse circumstance into a developmental experience? Since leadership is my professional interest, the above question even goes a bit deeper: Does hardship play a role in leadership development? Can people learn important leadership skills and competencies from their own experiences with hardship?
These and other related questions led me to start researching this topic two years ago. However, it was not until I faced my own set of hard circumstances that I began to understand the life-changing impact that hardship has on an individual. Kolb’s (1983) cycle of the experiential learning process has been validated in my own experience; I was better able to understand the role of hardship in shaping and molding leadership by the concrete experience of my own and others’ difficulties, as well as by the theoretical research I undertook.

The green canopies of the Fourth Coast Cafe jut out from the old brick building near the corner of Vine street and Westnedge avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The only twenty-four hour cafe in the city and, as far as I know, in the state is a social hub for a community of college students, alumni, free thinkers, and everyone else. It's a shining beacon of warmth and caffeine in even the darkest and coldest nights. The side door might be closed in the winter, but the front door is never locked.
As I enter through the glass door, the scent of coffee mingles with the smell of the street and the smoke of a couple on the sidewalk talking about politics, philosophy, and the latest additions to their record collections. To the right of the stairway, which leads up to the Crow's Nest restaurant, is another glass door which swings into the cafe. My ears are treated to snippets of conversations ranging from chess moves to stories of drunken debauchery. To my left, a barista turns on an industrial sized coffee grinder as another presses levers on a well used espresso machine, eliciting a low hiss as espresso fills a tiny metal cup. The place smells of old art, new coffee, fresh tea, and human energy. This coffee shop is where people come to meet with old friends and new minds. This is where they come to plan, and at times even create, new works of poetry, drawings, novels, and everything else which breaths life into life. This place is the living breath of Kalamazoo.
I add a little sugar to my drink and fall in love with the dull clank of the spoon against the thick walls of the tall glass cups the cafe uses. I look around and see that my usual table, in the center of the room, is taken, so I make my way to the bar stools and take a seat there. The chairs are surprisingly comfortable for being simple wooden seats. It's clear that the cafe knows well that people come here to stay for long periods at a time.
