Poet and Teacher Adrian Koesters Joins Kori on the Back Porch

    in Poetry

Adrian Koesters holds an MFA in poetry from the Rainier Writing workshop at Pacific Lutheran University and a Ph.D. in fiction and poetry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her first book of poems, Many Parishes, was published by BrickHouse Books as part of their New Poets Series, and other work has appeared in Berkeley Review, The Gettysburg Review, Hotel Amerika, and elsewhere. She has been a poetry and fiction assistant editor at Prairie Schooner and fiction editor at A River and Sound Review. She taught writing at UNL and the Creighton University MFA program, and lives in Omaha, Nebraska. Web URL: www.adriankoesters.com

Koesters' Many Parishes is an original. The poems seem to smack the hard-ass contemporary world up against a deep spiritual sense, until we see they're one and the same. Adrian Koesters is able to write of men calling out to a ten-year old ''spinster'' to ''come on down, sweetheart, I got something over here to show you,'' and allow us to feel in her small, frightened heart the identical anguish of soul as in the nun who's ''divided from the principalities and goes in terror of them.'' These poems, like the nuns, ''take things personally.'' They're lyrical confessions of the deepest griefs--abuse, divorce, doubt, and loneliness. They provide absolution, and positively joy, in their skillful and lucid singing. --Fleda Brown, author of No Need of Sympathy

My Mic Sounds Nice: An interview with Gospel Rap Artist Gem' N.I.

    in Music

Some people don't consider gospel rap to be a respectable way to present Christ to the world. However, there are those who applaud it for it's direct and brazen way of sharing God's love to a generation who may have never heard of Shirley Ceasar, Richard Smallwood, or Fred Hammond. This episode's special guest is gospel hip-hop artist Gem' N.I and I am looking forward to hearing her thoughts about being an out-the-box artist.

Raised in South Central Los Angeles, Gem' N.I. born DiEsha Carter began rapping at the age of ten after first hearing N.W.A. Her unique style of delivery and Christ centered flow has earned her a diverse following and inspired many.Gem' N.I. has shared her heart at poetry slams, open mic's, and anywhere else her message of hope, love, and faith will be appreciated. In the summer of 2014 she released her first Mixtape "Mrs. Martyr Music" and is currently in the studio working on her new project.

The Final WakeUp Call: Your Own Worst Enemy

    in Culture

    THE FINAL WAKE UP CALL:

Understanding that those around you, what you allow into your spirit, the thing you use to alter your spirit, are only mere summons of the problem of you.

For over four hundred years the Stolen Afrikan in AmeriKKKa has been robbed of the ancestry, their Afrikan spirituality, their science and their Story, they have been uprooted and are quickly dying.

The results of governmental institutional racism & genocide are chaotic; single parent households, unwed mothers, incarceration coupled with mis-education and the under educated have practically destroyed the black family. Their right minds are being destroyed with religion, drug addition, the prison & education system.

The continuous bombardments of the court systems manipulation and negative media influence have taken a toll targeted on black children, men and women.
Society has brainwashed the black women into believing that they don't need their black men.

Our women don't believe this because they refuse to see their own reflection, which is their black man because society has convinced the black females to destroy the only true hope for their survival....The Black Man!
The Black Lions are here to help our women experience the presence of a man so they do not try to defunct his true nature. And uplift our families & kin our children and our women.

...Maybe then our black women will discover that A Black Man was all she really needed in the first place.
We need our women by our side in the revolution.
