THE GIVING OF THANKS
This is Thankgsgiving Week, which means turkeys are on the chopping block by the millions. It also means that many Americans will be pretending that the early settlers to America were heroes, and not filthy cutthtoat gangsters who robbed, pillaged and killed to create a nation of their choosing.
For the Pilgrims, the Plymouth Rock landing represented hopes and dreams of freedom and life filled with prosperity.
For the Africans, the Plymouth Rock landing represented the crushing of hopes and dreams, with nightmares of bondage and death and a legacy of struggle.
In the celebration of the Thanksgiving Holiday, Africans across the world should be paid a debt of thanks at the very least by every race of people in existence.
Specifically, Europeans and their descendants owe us for being the currency and unpaid workforce for the creation of the new nation.
This month, as we make our long awaitied return to the air, we have a special treat in store as we dedicate this program to a celebration of the holiday season, specifically, Thanksgiving. As such, we're going to take a radical departure from our usual format and perform for you tonight...a play of sorts, starring the newly christened "clarkie-playhouse performers", that's a throwback to the old playhouse 90/radio serial formats from back in the day. Tonight's three act play is dedicated to our children and is called, "Thanksgiving Day;" and it's all about the pilgrims who first landed on this continent and the ordeals they faced, as well as the first native americans with whom they came into contact. After that, we'll take a short break and follow up with a free-form segment where we're all going to discuss Thanksgiving and what it means to each of us, as well as dole out some trivia and drop some knowledge. So, tune in, sit back, relax, and let us entertain you this evening!
Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide thanksgiving celebration in America on November 26, 1789, "as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many favors of Almighty God". In modern times the President of the United States, issues a proclamation, “pardoning” a turkey to ensures that it will spend the duration of its life roaming freely on farmland. American public school romanticizes Thanksgiving Day telling stories of pilgrims and “Indians” celebrating together, sharing harvested crops and cooked wild game. T

In 1620, 102 Pilgrims, Separatists from the Church of England sailed east across the Atlantic aboard the cramped 100 ft. "Mayflower" in a voyage that if compared with today, would be like a voyage to the moon. For 66 days they lived in an ill-lighted, close-quartered, rolling, pitching, stinking, over-heated "below-decks"; the hatches battened down, the smell of the bilge in their nostrils, and the crew hostile towards Separatists. Cloistered in a space the size of a volleyball court, 102 people with their spiritual leader William Bradford endured the unendurable. Bradford spoke of this voyage in his and Edward Winslow's work: Thanksgiving Readings, also with his first-hand account of the first harvest celebration in America. And in it, he makes a direct connection with the Hebrew experience of the Exodus from Egypt. In his account, he uses the language of Jewish Sukkot:The Feast of Tabernacles. How did Bradford see both events as similar? Tune in and take notes! Your host, Rev. Rick Anderson, on "Jewish Roots", each Thursday at 9:30 pm, EST at www.ScripturesDramatized.com.
