It is the Month of Ramadan and there naturally is a lot of focus on food: what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat, where to eat, etc. Inspite of the large number of Muslims all over the world and the numerous Qur'anic injunctions many Muslims are not aware of some basic principles which make one's food unlawful (haraam) to eat.
This short lecture will focus on understanding issues such as Halaal, Haraam, Zabiha (dhabiha), "the food of the people of the Book", and Kosher. We will also mention some popular ingredients found in many processed foods which are haraam.
This class will be broadcast live from Masjid al-Mu'min (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) inshaa'Allah.

Founded by Phillip Jackson in 1996, The Black Star Project is an educational reform organization focused on eliminating the racial academic achievement gap by involving parents and communities in the education of their children.
The Black Star Project operates with a belief in the strength of parental and community involvement in education to eliminate the racial academic achievement gap. Better parents produce better communities, better schools and better students! Mr. Jackson's voice is prolific and powerful in its advocacy for African American student’s achievement in school. He states, "It is not income, race, language barriers, cultural background, education level of parents or social status, but the extent to which a student’s family is able to create a home environment that encourages learning; express high and realistic academic achievement expectations for their children; and become involved in productive ways in their child’s education at school, at home and in the community. "
Phillip Jackson is on a mission to re-popularize academic success among young Black people through a consciousness raising campaign illustrated in the play "Educate or Die"(TM) performed in Middle and High Schools.
