Is Chicago the Birthplace of Gospel Music?

    in Music

Ever wonder where Gospel music, as we know it, started?  Was it Mississippi or Georgia, Texas or somewhere in Ohio? Could it have been Chicago, Illinois?

Well, we did too and to answer that question you would need a historian. Someone who has studied long and hard with a passion for truth and is qualified to shed light on this topic by sharing their knowledge, research and experience. We found several individuals and tonight’s guest is one of them.

Bob Marovich is a gospel music historian, author, and radio host.  “Gospel Memories,” a radio program of classic gospel, spiritual, and jubilee music, airs on Chicago’s WLUW-FM.

Bob writes about classic and contemporary gospel music as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gospel Music (www.journalofgospelmusic.com).  The website, formerly known as The Black Gospel Blog, was nominated for a Rhythm of Gospel Award in 2013.

Bob’s work has been published widely in reference books and His first book, “A City Called Heaven: Chicago and the Birth of Gospel Music”, will be published in March 2015 by the University of Illinois Press - Music in American Life Series.

Join Host Petula Beckles as Bob shares his wealth of Gospel Music knowledge with us tonight.

    The Power of True Love

    in Music

What is it about true love that touches every heart? Why does the simple phrase “I love you” evoke such universal joy?

Men give various reasons, but the real reason is that every person is born with the Spirit of God. Since all love emanates from God, we are born with the capacity and the desire to love and to be loved.

What do we value most in life? What makes us happy? Some will say "money and wealth." Others will respond without doubt: "Wisdom and knowledge." Some others may suggest: "Power, position and fame." Are money, wealth, knowledge, power and fame then the most important things in our lives?

Trying to find lasting love without God is like trying to quench thirst by drinking from an empty cup—you can go through the motions, but the thirst still remains.

Only God’s love can make us truly happy.

A Closer Look at The History Of Gospel Music

    in Music

The Gospel Music experience cannot be told in a short story, or even in a melody of songs, for it is far too rich, far too harmonious and deliberately stimulating.  It is a living experience, always changing, always giving, and always becoming the foundation that gave moral, physical and spiritual support to a great and powerful people.

Gospel Music is a shining beacon of hope, a fantastic journey of joy divine, and a triumphant victory in God that comes from deep down in the souls of God’s Chosen People. The greatest melodies and the most stimulating songs have been given to this Nation and the World through the African American experience.

There has been no other event in history that has been more compelling, convincing, or persuasive than Gospel Music.   Some of the most beautiful music of all times was born out of intense grief and suffering, and Gospel Music is no exception.

After thousands of years, the sound of Gospel Music is still enthralling and captivating because it stands against the social background as a shadow of today’s community problems and dilemmas.  From the 1930’s to the 1960’s desperate circumstances controlled our lives; despair and hope, life and death; but Gospel Music mirrored our predicaments as a collective group of people, it reflected upon our social status, and eventually reverberated in our made up minds that God was indeed on our sides.

Join us as we take a closer look at the history of Gospel Music. Host, Petula Beckles will speak with Industry Professionals Zadella "Mama" Curtis, and Dr. D. Join US! (917)932-8802.

  • Introducing Gospel Artist Jewel Bell

    in Music

Jewel’s soulful and jazz-style of singing came as a result of growing up listening to artists like Witness, Commissioned, The Clark Sisters, and Anita Baker. Her love for songwriting began at eight years old with her introduction to poetry. This hunger and thirst for singing and writing would continue through her Elementary and High School years.

She attended Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, where she received classical vocal training and sang with the University’s Ladies Chorus. As a student, Jewel continued to develop her craft-singing in the school's gospel choir and countless musical groups.

Jewel has been a member of the United Voices Mass Choir, under the direction of Darnell Crandle,  and in 2003, Jewel joined a group named Simply Blessed, who in 2008 released their self-produced album "With You" with great local success. She was also a member of the Metropolitan Mass Choir, under the direction of Keith Ashmeade, the United Praise Ensemble, which led  to her involvement in praise team ministry, which granted her the opportunity to sing for various congregations, opening up for such world- renowned figures such as Bishop T.D. Jakes & Marvin Sapp.

On the heels of that success, God still had an even bigger plan for Jewel’s future and she was called to spread the gospel through song as a solo artist. Her music ministry continues to reach others as a Minister of Music, Praise & Worship  Leader and Choir Director.

Jewel's debut project, "Rain or Shine" is a testimony of her journey, filled with experiences of God's love, relationships, challenges and faith.
