Do Your Kids Respect You? 9 Ways to Change Their Attitude
By Janet Lehman, MSW
We often forget that children aren’t born with a built-in sense of respect for others. While each child has a different personality, all children need to be taught to be respectful. From birth, kids learn to manipulate their world to get their needs met—this is natural. But it’s our job as parents to teach them respectful ways of doing this.
People wonder why kids have gotten so much more disrespectful these days—we see children and teens arguing with adults (or ignoring them outright), using foul language, copping an attitude, and not using manners or respecting those in authority. Sadly, this has become the norm for many children and teens. In my opinion, it really is a different world right now than the one we grew up in. Movies, music, video games and television all seem to glorify a disrespectful, angry, rude way of dealing with others. This means that in some ways we have to work harder as parents to teach our kids to be respectful. Added to this is the fact that parents are also busier than ever before, which makes it much harder to respond immediately to our kids. Let’s face it, it’s easier to let things slide when you’re worn out and stressed from working so hard.
The boys reflect on a week in which the Bears and Saints finally won, the Cardinals finally lost (and the Broncos, almost), and the Falcons, Panthers, Packers, and Bengals remained flawless. Then they make their pick for the Thursday night AFC South tangle between Indianapolis, who may have their leader Andrew Luck, and Houston, who will have Captain America, J.J. Watt.

In this episode of "Bringing Voices To Power" me and April discuss more about the queen mentality vs the hood-rat mentality. April Gail Lee holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and a Masters of Mental Health Counseling from Walden University. April is a strong black queen who has strong views about the relationship between the black man and black woman. She also has had some powerful testimony about the dangers of involving the black family in family court and the long-term effects that it has on the child. She lends an important voice to the Facebook Page "Afrocentric Psychology" and the black community that provokes great discussion and debate. We will discuss what makes a queen and what constitutes a hood-rat and how we can reunite the black man and woman for the betterment of the black community. We will also talk about what to do when a black non-cutodial parent goes downtown and presses the "white-supremacist button" of financial slavery.

The Seattle Seahawks better be damn glad that Kam Chancellor decided to end his "hold out". His tremendous effort play at the end of the 4th quarter saved the Seahawks season and their playoff hopes. Megatron must be kicking himself for allowing Kam to strip him of the football just before he scored a game winning TD in Seattle. Now, the Lions are still winless and the Seahawks look to have righted the ship. They face Cincinatti next week and the possibility of ending up 1-4 after that matchup was definitely a distinct possibility. Yet, Kam Chancellor who held out for virtually all of training camp, made the play that may spur this team back into dynasty mode. However, they must defeat a more than confident Bengals squad that refuses to come up short this year. Will the Bengals ground the Seahawks or will Seattle prove that their earlier issues are behind them. Tune in tonight and every Wednesday evening for fresh perspectives on the NFL and of course the early rumblings in the NBA.
