THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE:
Peer support for people with similar life experiences has proven to be tremendously important towards helping many move through difficult situations. These similar life experiences may include people who have lost children, people with alcohol and substance abuse problems, and etc. In general, the value of peer support has been substantiated by the fact that people who have like experiences can better relate and can consequently offer more authentic empathy and validation. A Peer Support Group is a voluntary gathering of people with similar challenges to share experiences, reveal coping strategies and offer understanding. Tonight we will take a closer look at the peer support group concept through the eyes a newly formed organization whose mission is to embrace, educate and empower families and communities impacted by substance use disorder. Can a Peer Support Group be what you have been looking for?

Twenty years ago, men atoned for the wrongs done to their families and pledged to make them right. Twenty years later, many of those same men are still struggling with issues of marriage, childrearing, employment, community involvement, and whatever habits or behaviors they pledged to get rid of in order to be of better service to their communities. Men must step up and take a leadership role in ending this gun violence. But men also need women to do some things to restore dignity and respect to men. What should women do to support those men who are pledging to stand up and make a change?

Counselor Mandy Eppley speaks with marketing/branding specialist and philanthropist Charlie Elberson as he shares the story of how the sudden death of a colleague, who was a young mother, was a pivotal moment in his life that made him ask “am I living from my heart?” This caused a shift in his life as he started using this mantra of “living from the heart” as a compass on his journey. They also talk about how courageous it is to keep your heart open and tie this into Step 2 “Open Your Heart” from the Model of Heart-Centered Grief. During the latter part of the show they also discuss the importance of service and how giving creates and strengthens the human connection.
Charlie Elberson has the best life ever. A 30-year ad agency veteran, he helps Wray Ward’s clients create brilliant marketing and branding strategies. On top of that for seven years he’s been the Trustee of Reemprise Fund, making game-changing grants for visionary non-profits using a venture philanthropy model. In his free time Charlie plays in a middle-aged cover band, writes and cooks and keeps active at in church. He wears increasingly stronger-but-still-interesting glasses.
