"Teach It Right, or, Right to Teach," Theater for the New City's 2015 Street Theater musical, whose free performances will be presented in City streets, parks and playgrounds throughout the five boroughs August 8 to September 20. The piece tackling the challenges and struggles facing NYC's public education system will have one performance in Queens on Sun, August 30 - 2PM - Queens Travers Park, 34th Ave between 77th & 78th Streets.
The musical is written and directed by TNC's Artistic Director, Crystal Field, and composed by Joseph Vernon Banks. It tells the saga of a NYC middle school student and teacher whose school faces disputes over privatization that reflect the challenges and struggles of the world outside. Together they take an Odyssey through an urban underground in which they witness how public school students are deprived of art, music, libraries, after school programs and hopes for college through union busting, corporate education reform, super testing and destruction of school facilities. They are kidnapped by the Real Estate Cartel and its president, B.M. Peabody, but are rescued by Peabody's beautiful daughter, a community activist, who has a crush on the young man. Energized by what they learn, the young man and the teacher become leaders in the fight to teach it right and for the right to teach.
We will talk with Crystal Field.
