  • The UnSlut Project: Stop "Slut" Shaming and Sexual Bullying

    in Relationships

Have you ever been called a "slut"? If so, how did you feel? Whether you are sexually active or not the term can be hurtful and embarrassing. If you’re a parent of a teen, have you heard about "slut" shaming and the dire effects it can have on your impressionable teenager?

"Slut" shaming and sexual bullying is occurring every day in America. Many teens are experiencing these issues and feel uncomfortable reporting it to their parents or other adults. Emily Lindin, who founded of The UnSlut Project in April 2013, found herself in this exact situation when she was eleven. She began journaling about these incidents of "slut" shaming and sexual bullying she faced in school.

As Emily published her journal entries, she hoped that her words would reach teens experiencing the same thing bringing awareness about this prevalent issue. The UnSlut Project started as a small online personal submission and has now grown to incorporate the stories of girls, women, and men of many ages, backgrounds, and nationalities. Emily will be discussing the UnSlut Project and her upcoming video project “Slut: A Documentary Film” and her soon to be released book, “UnSlut: A Diary and A Memoir”.

Emily Lindin is the founder of The UnSlut Project, ? an online community where survivors of sexual bullying and "slut" shaming can share their stories, and where girls who are currently suffering can find support and solidarity.

?The UnSlut Project's crowd-funded film, "Slut: A Documentary Film," is in post-production and Emily's book, "UnSlut: A Diary and A Memoir," will be published in Dec., 2015.

A "Rowdy" Tribute to Roddy Piper

    in Wrestling

At 15, Roddy had his first professional wrestling match. He had never seen a pro match, but his amateur coach was a pro referee when it came in to town. Another wrestler missed a plane and Roddy's coach told him that “I can get you 25 dollars,” Roddy immediately took it. Roddy's pipe band was so happy for him that they played Roddy into the arena. As Roddy was being piped into the arena, the announcer only knew his first name as “Roddy” and having to continue the announcement he announced “Ladies and Gentlemen, here comes Roddy the Piper!”

Roddy jumped in the ring and in front of him stood 320 pounds of Nordic Viking: Larry "The Axe" Hennig, who beat Roddy in 10 seconds by busting his nose and eye open, setting one of many records of Roddy's: shortest match in the history of the arena. With this match, Roddy Piper was born and began a full-time wrestling career at the age of 15— A permanent record, as it is illegal now.

Roddy's mentors-- or fathers as he called them, were some great fighters, such as the toughest man in the world-- Judo Gene Labell, Mad Dog Vachon, Muhammad Ali, and even the great Lou Thez, just to name a few. Roddy was smuggled in the back of a truck with a ring in it into the United States of America and never stopped fighting.

When Roddy Piper was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005, by 16 time World Champion Ric Flair, Flair said “Roddy is the greatest entertainer in Wrestling History, bar none”. “Rowdy” Roddy Piper is the last of the real deal gunslingers of Pro Wrestling. Recently, the WWE named Rowdy Roddy Piper the greatest Villain in the history of Professional Wrestling.

    in Current Events

Today, Debbie Barth and Lynn Bensy are talking with Pattie Curran! Pattie Curran is running to represent North Carolina’s 5th congressional district.

Pattie enlisted in the Army National Guard (ARNG) when she turned 18 and later attended Officer Candidate School, receiving her commission just prior to her college graduation.  As a veteran, a Christian, wife and homeschooling mom, and … as a former social worker, Pattie understands, and has experienced … the challenges others, in these positions have had to face.

Ms. Curran is also the founder and president of the nonprofit Shwachman-Diamond America. Two… of her three children … have a rare disease, Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome with secondary mitochondrial disease.  She knows full well, the catastrophic financial ramifications of Obamacare and is adamant in her fight to repeal Obamacare.

Debbie and Lynn will be talking with Pattie about how Pattie was able to rise about the dire circumstances of her own childhood and go on to become the first person in her family to graduate from college.

Pattie’s story is one of encouragement and inspiration.  Her ability to overcome life’s adversities, combined with her desire to make this a better place for her own children to live, is the driving force in her political aspirations.

  • Dying with Dignity: Starting the Conversation to Close the Healthcare Gap

    in Health

What constitutes a ‘good death’? How and where are people dying? Are the needs of the dying being met? How can we advocate for a “good death”? Considering we are all going to die and lose loved ones at some point in time in our journey through life, these are all important questions to explore. Recently there has been an increased emphasis on the importance of addressing healthcare disparities in end of life care. This increased emphasis is mostly as a result of a bountiful of research on how dying patients are invisible in many acute healthcare settings in the United States and are victims of healthcare disparities. That is, certain groups receive lower quality of care than others. Worse than being a dying patient, is being a dying patient who is perceived by medical personnel as belonging to a different race, culture or ethnicity. These biases that lead to disparate treatment are often present at a subconscious level.

Dr. Jacqueline N. Font-Guzmán is associate professor at the Werner Institute at Creighton University. She is a certified mediator and arbitrator by the Puerto Rico Supreme Court.  She is a Fulbright Scholar who has actively participated in the field of conflict studies through national and international conferences and workshops, and has conducted a wide variety of trainings and seminars in the field.

Dr. Font-Guzmán conducts qualitative research with a focus on the fields of healthcare disparities, law, and conflict engagement. Specifically, how people construct meaning at critical points in their lives about their identity (e.g., professional and community), reflective learning/practice, and end of life to explore the manners in which meaning-making leads them to productively engage with conflict. She also explores how marginalized individuals create alternate stories and counter-narratives to address institutional injustices.
