"Family talk Wednesday" A Parent Should Be A Parent…Not A Friend

    in Family

Every time I hear a parent brag that her child is her best friend, I cringe and think, “Well, that’s too bad.”  The job description of parent is mighty long—nurturer, teacher, advisor, consultant, guide, spotter, disciplinarian, consoler, cheerleader.  But I am quite sure “friend” is not on the list.  I fully believe that you really like your child, that there are times when you get along like peas and carrots, that you say you can read each other’s minds. But your child, whether young or old, needs you to be her parent. She has enough friends, and so do you. I know that you don’t get to spend much time with your child; both of your schedules are packed 24/7.  So you want what little time you have together to be pleasant. I know it’s just easier to say yes, and everyone will be happy…for the moment.

Children are not like self-basting turkeys; they just can’t grow themselves.  Children will seek all the good stuff they can get—be it extra tv time, cookies from the platter, or minutes at the mall. And they count on you to stop them, to rein them back in. It is their job to test the limits; it is your job to stop them.  And as children get older, more than ever they rely on you to be their brakes, especially when faced with peer pressure. “No, my dad will kill me if I get home after curfew.” Your child needs to know that you love her so much that you will tolerate her explosive protest when you lay down the law and you will not change your mind because of it.  Nothing can be more important to you than her well being, her safety, and her learning the rules of the road.

Watch out! Seniors with Dysfunctional Families

    in Caregiving

When adult children with aging loved ones start working the family on planning for the future they comment, “On, this will be interesting because my family does not get along”.  This is a red flag that this family maybe dealing with dysfunction from their earlier years.  There may have been the presence of alcohol, emotional distance, unclear boundaries and a lack of communication.  As a friend explained her childhood, “It was like walking on eggshells.”

A functional family can more easily address the decline of their parent because they were raised to solve problems a group.  They communicate well, that does not mean they can place their parent in an assisted living without emotions.

This radio segment will delve into the traits of functional and dysfunctional families along with solutions for families caring for their senior.

The King Me Show: Sibling Rivalry

    in Radio

Sibling rivalry is a type of competition or animosity among siblings, whether blood related or not. Siblings generally spend more time together during childhood than they do with parents. The sibling bond is often complicated and is influenced by factors such as parental treatment, birth order, personality, and people and experiences outside the family.  Sibling rivalry often continues throughout childhood and can be very frustrating and stressful to parents. Adolescents fight for the same reasons younger children fight, but they are better equipped to physically, intellectually, and emotionally hurt and be intellectually and emotionally hurt by each other. Physical and emotional changes cause pressures in the teenage years, as do changing relationships with parents and friends. Fighting with siblings as a way to get parental attention may increase in adolescence. Sibling rivalry can continue into adulthood and sibling relationships can change dramatically over the years. Events such as a parent’s illness may bring siblings closer together, whereas marriage may drive them apart, particularly if the in-law relationship is strained.

North Florida Writer Live "Short Take": Imagine...........(5)

    in Lifestyle

IMAGINE THAT YOU BUY YOUR BEAUTIFUL HOUSE, YOU NEED TO MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS ON YOUR PROPERTY AND REFINEMENTS AND YOU TAKE CARE OF IT AND THINGS ARE NOW PERFECT.  BUT WAIT, DID YOU GET APPROVAL FOR YOUR ACTIONS? DOES IT MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR PROPERTY TAX ASSESSMENTS AND DID YOU PAY ANY PENALTIES AND FINES ASSESSED FOR NOT FOLLOWING LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL REGULATIONS?

SERIOUSLY, FOLKS, IF YOU THINK THAT A HOME IS A MAN'S (OR WOMAN'S) CASTLE, YOU MIGHT FIND YOURSELF IN FOR A HUGE SHOCK.  AND TODAY MORE AND MORE DIFFERENT AGENCIES AND OFFICES AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT ARE GETTING IN ON THE GRAVY TRAIN OF TAKING YOUR MONEY FOR HAVING THE PRIVILEGE TO OWN LAND IN THEIR JURISDICTION AND IT IS LIKELY TO ONLY GET WORSE IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

AND IF AND WHEN YOU PAY OFF YOUR MORTGAGE, JUST TRY NOT PAYING PROPERTY TAXES OR OTHER LOCAL ASSESSMENTS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS?  YOU COULD VERY WELL FIND YOURSELF OUT ON THE STREET AND YOU REMAIN AT THE MERCY OF HUNGRY GOVERNMENT AGENCIES THAT ALWAYS WANT TO TAX MORE SO THEY CAN SPEND MORE.

JUST BE AWARE AND MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE RULES BEFORE YOU GET YOURSELF IN A "PICKLE".

    Deadbeat Parents, and Child support.

    in Entertainment

Deadbeat parents are those who have been ordered by the Family law courts to pay child support monies of an unspecified amount, to the custodial parent (One who has custody of the child), but he/she is refusing to follow the order. Even when they have the financial means to do so. Or are you a listener who would like to weigh in on this heated topic?... Well, the queens would love the opportunity to hear your story, or get your feedback, right here in the playhouse!!!  "See you there"!!!!

What does it take to make step parenting work? Part 2

    in Romance

Tonight we are talking to Tola Onibanjo about Step-parenting and how she managed to successfully parent her children.  If you are dating and you or your partner have children this show will help you. On Tuesday we started the conversation and we continue it...

Tola Onigbanjo popularly known as ‘WiseTola’ is who one would call a woman of many hats. A mother of 5 & a grandmother, an author, radio presenter, host and also the founder of Women4Africa an organisation which seeks to ‘celebrate the ordinary woman doing extraordinary things’ which has also been dubbed as the largest gathering of African women in Europe. Despite her wearing many hats, she still finds time to put family first. Her passion for parenting is what led to her writing her very first ever book which is titled ‘STEPS – It’s Time To Quit Step-Parenting And Become A Parent’. The book as the title suggests is about step-parenting and deals with real life as Tola speaks from her own experiences and how she handled issues that are most likely to arise in such family relationships.

Mobile Apps for the Caregiver - from AARP??

    in Technology

When you think of AARP, do mobile apps come to mind? AARP is known to provide discounts to is members, provide branded insurance products, and lobby on behalf of Social Security and Medicare. Recently, this same non-profit has released two mobile apps - targeting the Caregiver community.

A caregiver is a term for anyone who helps or provides care to another individual, often a parent or spouse, in handling their daily activities. The caregiver can be paid, such as a nurse, but is more often an unpaid relative. And the person receiving care is often suffering an impairment, and/or dealing with health issues.

These two apps released by AARP (for iOS and Android) provide features designed to help in providing care. For instance, the apps help manage medications, keep a schedule of doctor's appointments and other medical needs, and create and maintain notes you want to share with the doctor. But will this work? Does this actually help someone take care of a loved one? Are these features unique? Are they really the features that a Caregiver needs?

On May 28th, at a special 11am EST/8am Pacific time, we will be joined by Trisha San Diego of AARP, who is the driving force behind the creation and release of these Apps, and we'll ask her these questions.

We'll talk about these apps and ask if there is a sign of things to come from AARP?

Tune in Live at 11am EST, Thursday, May 28th!
