Episode 259: The Islamic State - rise & world view, with Craig Whiteside

    in Military

The Islamic State, ISIL/ISIS/Daesh - whatever people may call them - are not a flash in the pan. Not quite insurgency, not quiet terrorist organization, not quite nation state - what they are is a presence that has resilience, trans-national support, and has a long range plan.

What is their background, how have they evolved, and how do they view the world?

Our guest for the full hour to discuss this and more will be Craig Whiteside, LTC USA (Ret.), Associate Professor of Theater Security Decision Making for the Naval War College Monterey at the Naval Postgraduate School. Craig came to the War College from Washington State University, where he was a PhD student in Political Science and taught American Government and National Security Affairs. Prior to returning to school, Professor Whiteside was a career infantry officer in the U.S. Army with service in the airborne infantry. He is an Iraq war veteran and served with the Geronimos of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry in Iskandariyah as the battalion executive officer during 2006-7. He finished his military service as the Professor of Military Science at Washington State. Professor Whiteside is currently working on his dissertation investigating the political worldview of the Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS). He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Here's a little about The Chute Trainer"

The idea and concept started in 2011 on the softball fields in Pocatello, Idaho. Founding partner and conceptual development person, Ruben Arzola, was looking for a way to increase his throwing ability without adding weights, spending a lot of time or money on a gym membership or purchasing useless gadgets that simply don’t work. While joking around with his brother, Joe, Ruben picked up a GI Joe doll with a parachute attached and threw it at his brother. The idea was born.

Later in the show: Donna White - Class A LPGA Tour Division, Class A LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Member & PGA Member who was just inducted into the LPGA T&CP Hall of Fame.

Then a discussion of three recent books dealing with the topic of the "spiritual but not religious" demographic in America.  Gloom, doom, and eschatology through the lens of a somewhat frivolous denizen of the Piedmont of North-Carolina.

Current events and Biblical prophecy. Things are continuing to stack up around the world as we witness daily events that match the signs Jesus told us to watch for that would herald His soon return.

Army Colonel Gilberto Villahermosa served for 33 years and has traveled extensively throughout Afghanistan, first in 1995, when he entered the country for discussions with Tajik rebels; then as the Executive Officer for the Commander of NATO’s International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) and the U.S. Senior National Representative to NATO in Kabul (2004-2005); and finally with the United States Central Command in 2012.

As the Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché in Yemen he experienced first-hand Al Qaeda’s 17 September 2008 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Sana’a which killed more than a dozen people, developed America’s counter-terrorism centric engagement strategy, which prevented an Al Qaeda tipping point in the region in 2009, and grew the military budget from $4 to almost $200 million a year, while overseeing a U.S. Military Group of more than 150 military personnel.

Gilberto Villahermosa is a Published Author and experienced Public Speaker.  He is the author of “Honor and Fidelity. The 65th Infantry in Korea” and “Hitler’s Paratrooper. Chris Steely: Find Your Purpose in Business; Here's How

    in Entrepreneur

Many of us seem lost in this new economy.  What should we be doing for work?  But does that job or vocation even exist in this new economy?  And if it does how do we figure out how to find it or how to do it?  I asked Business Coach Chris Steely to talk about that.  He says it’s about being a warrior, a fighter, but first you must understand your purpose.

80% don’t like their jobs… Dick Bowles What Color is Your Parachute… what you are good at … now discover your strengths… what you want to do… with mastery.”

But if so many of us can’t find fulfilling work or any work at all -- doesn’t it say that this is a new economy that might not offer us the work we want to do -- but the work we have to do for the economy.

“It’s called compromising your soul…once discover fire in your heart… soul suicide… diluting capabilities… compromise to pay the bills… not go through life as compromiser… market may not be receptive… like being a gladiator… innovative but a warrior or gladiator… The Alchemist … the Peaceful Warrior… in a war … who tell you you can’t do it… with an imminent arrival.”

His site is bizkickers.com where you can learn more about innovating yourself and your business. My take: you have to get interested and involved to become successful.  That’s why I offer my ROIL System which is Read, Observe, Interview and Learn.  My website has 5 short instructional videos on that at informed not inflamed dot-com.  More with Chris in our next segments. That’s informed not inflamed.

Hills and Hops with Mike Skeen From Pikes Peak

    in Automotive

What goes better together then cars and drinking....wait, maybe that came out wrong.  How about just kicking back and talking about cars and the automotive world while you enjoy a stiff drink, tasty brew, or a fancy cocktail?  Awww thats better.  We will attempt to cover all those bases in this show we present to you on Fridays!  What the hell is going in new cars and the automotive culture in general?  Find out with Matt and Jay every week, oh yeah and enjoy a night cap:)

This week we talk about the "the hill" better known as Pikes Peak where every year hundreds of vehicles ranging from super bikes to wildly modified semi tractors try to rocket up the 12 mile 156 turn run to the summit faster than any in their class. The standing record is 8:13.878 set in 2013 by 9 time WRC champ Sebastien Loeb.  While we don't expect that to fall, we do expect some amazing action out here.  We run into current Pirelli World Challenge pilot Mike Skeen, and talk about his attempt this year on the hill in his insane Nissan GTR (Pikes Peak Special) - Braking up hill, and packing a parachute!

We end the episode talking about our favorite summer time brews in the venerable full body IPAs.  If it was good enough for pirates it's good enough for us!
