Performer and activist Aaron Calafato takes to the stage to deliver a powerful message on the role that for-profit institutions play in the student debt crisis. His one-man show, For Profit, informs people about the topic from his own personal experience as an admissions counselor at a for-profit college in the midwest. The show made its debut in March 2012.
Annie Lindstrom welcomes Aaron back to Talkupy on Thursday January 29, at 11 am Eastern Time. He'll give us an update on For Profit and its continuing impact on audiences across the U.S. We'll also discuss Aaron's involvement in a Theater Communications Group initiative to build a model that would enable regional theaters to host more socially conscious and politically minded theater pieces, and, his upcoming performance for the American Association of University Professors at Columbia University.
For more information on Aaron go to his web site or Twitter page. For more information on Talkupy go to Talkupy.net or follow @Talkupy_Radio on Twitter.

This episode of "Stage Right" looks at the 2012 Republican Theater Festival in Philadelphia. What were the plays produced? Were the actos/playwrights conservatives? What's the difference between "Republican" and "Conservative"? Most importantly: how did they get away with it? Can we reproduce such festivals all over the country? And--can we get to a point where we do not have to? Join us as we applaud the bravery of Cara Blouin, the festival producer.
Picking up where we left off last week, today's episode will continue our review of the 2012 Republican Theater Festival in Philadelphia. We will look at the plays and the playwrights--who may or may not be "conservative" (were they "playing" at being conservative just to get produced?) -- and wonder why the festival was called "Republican" rather than "conservative." Join us as we ponder that very important question and don't forget to call in or write to "Stage Right" to have your voice heard!
On today's episode of "Stage Right," I will forego my usual formal interview format and concentrate on the voice of my listeners. Since its inception we've been pondering the question "just what is conservative theatre anyway?" I think we need to revisit that question to see if, in the six months we've been on the air, we have come any closer to answering it. I will rely on the comments of my listeners to spark our discussion. Please join us for what promises to be an enlightening show!

Adam Curtis's new documentary, condensed & adapted to radio by Kenneth Dowst. An interesting and entertaining look at the histories and politics of Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and the U.S. since the 1940s.
PART ONE It's about the history and politics of Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and the U.S. since 1946. About the many failures of reformers--American, Russian, and Afghan alike--to remake and modernize Afghanistan. It's about shrewd and cynical calculations by Saudi and American leaders--who promote development and stability in Saudi Arabia by exporting Saudi extremist Islam (Wahhabism) abroad--including to Afghanistan.
PART TWO looks at the failed Russian attempts to reform Afghanistan in the 1980s ... the failed American attempts to reform Afghanistan since 2001 ... the transfer of political power in the West from governments to defense industries and the banks
PART THREE shows the corruption, conflicts, complexity, warlordism, and ever-shifting local alliances of Afghan society today. And it shows the naivete and ignorance of the English and American occupying forces (and of the politicians who dispatched them).

We are honored and thrilled to have as our guest on today's episode of "Stage Right" Mr. David Marcus. David is a playwright and blogger who has been featured in "The Federalist," a web magazine focused on culture, politics, and religion. David's blogs have discussed, quite rationally, the lack of conservative voices in theatre and what we can do about it. He was also a playwright represented at the Republican Theater Festival in 2012. Be sure to join me for what promises to be an enlightening discussion with a man who shares our cause!
