Overcoming Stress and Addiction With The Gift of Maybe with Allison Carmen

    in Moms and Family

Anxiety disorders affect more than 40 million adults, causing lack of sleep, depression, and even addiction. Former lawyer Allison Carmen was an addict, but her addiction wasn’t to drugs, alcohol, or even gambling; her addiction was to certainty. Every moment, Allison desperately sought to know or predict what would happen next, trapping her in a spiral of anxiety, uncertainty and negativity.

Allison’s new book, The Gift of Maybe, provides the tools needed to embrace uncertainty as an opportunity. It inspires us not just to persevere through life’s challenges, but to alter our mindset and discover more hope, joy, and success as a result.

Join Allison Carmen and me on Tuesday, February 3, 10-11 A.M. CT US, as we discuss how embracing the concept of “Maybe” can reduce the stress and worry in our lives and open the doors to hope and possibility.

Dr. Stanton Peele on overcoming an addiction with values and self-determination

    in Psychology

Amy Alkon's Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life!" with the best brains in science.

*"Best Of" replay for Thanksgiving weekend.

Stanton Peele points out that most people recover from addictions on their own -- without AA or rehab, and what makes the difference is values, not biology.

On tonight’s show, he’ll debunk many of the myths in addiction treatment -- especially the notion that addiction is a “disease” people are powerless to overcome. That defeatest message is especially counterproductive to overcoming addiction, and it’s been supported with bad science and hearsay. Join us tonight to hear what solid science says about how addiction or bad habits can be overcome -- to the point where people are not just going cold-turkey off some substance or behavior till their next relapse, but where they develop meaningful ways of coping that no longer have them turning to their old crutch.

Peele’s book we’ll be discussing is Recover! Stop Thinking Like an Addict and Reclaim Your Life with The PERFECT Program.

Join me and all my fascinating guests every Sunday, 7-8 p.m. PT, 10-11 p.m. ET, at blogtalkradio.com/amyalkon or subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher.

Please order my new book, the science-based and funny "Good Manners For Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck," -- only about $11 at Amazon.

I was carried back to the days of the disciples, and was shown the beloved John, that God had a special work for him to accomplish.  Satan was determined to hinder this work, and he led on his servants to destroy John.  But God sent his angel and wonderfully preserved him.  All who witnessed the great power of God manifested in the deliverance of John, were astonished, and many were convinced that God was with him, and that the testimony which he bore concerning Jesus was correct.  Those who sought to destroy him were afraid to again attempt to take his life, and he was permitted to suffer on for Jesus.  He was falsely accused by his enemies, and was shortly banished to a lonely island, where the Lord sent his angel to reveal to him things which were to take place upon the earth, and the state of the church down through to the end; her backslidings, and the position the church should occupy if she would please God, and finally overcome.  The angel from heaven came to John in majesty.  His countenance beamed with the excellent glory of heaven.  He revealed to John scenes of deep and thrilling interest concerning the church of God, and brought before him the perilous conflicts they were to endure.  John saw them pass through fiery trials, and made white and tried, and, finally, victorious overcomers, gloriously saved in the kingdom of God. GC
