The murder of Malcolm X, the exile of Robert F. Williams, who was forced the flee to Cuba with the combined terrors of the FBI and the minions of Southern justice snapping at his heels, and the exile of the late W.E.G.  Du Bois, who, in the sunset of a valiant life, made three symbolic gestures as a final legacy to his people (renouncing his American citizenship, ‘returning’ to Africa to become a citizen of Ghana, and cursing capitalism while extolling communism as the hope of the future) —these three events on the one hand, and on the other hand the award of a Nobel Prize to Martin Luther King and the inflation of the image to that of an international hero, bear witness to  the historical fact that the only Negro American allowed to attain national or international fame have been the puppets and lakers of the white power structure—and entertainers and athletes….

It is against the back ground of the traditional role of the Negro entertainer and athlete in racial crisis and the rebellion against that tradition — that the Muhammad  Ali— Floyd Patterson fight for the heavyweight championship must be viewed."  Soul On Ice by Eldridge Cleaver

"Malcolm X knew that he needed a prominent ally to help him launch a new organization once his permanent suspension became public.   It so happened that Cassius Clay, scheduled to fight Sonny Liston  for the heavyweight championship of the world, was a good friend of Malcolm X, one of the few people Malcolm X ever invited to this house….." JUdas Factor Karl Evanzz

"The broad support for Muhammed Ali among negroes had nothing to do with the black Muslims’  racist ideology.  Even the followers of the late beloved Malcolm X, many of whom despise Muhammad Ali for the scurvy remarks he made about the fallen Malcolm….." Soul On Ice

Gitmo gone - Helicopter parents - No help for Syrian Christians!

    in Politics

Hr1   What do you think the Obama Admin is doing behind the scenes while all eyes are on Paris? Be afraid! Letting 5 Gitmo terrorists was just the beginning.

Are you a helicopter parent? You could be hurting your kids!

Corey Duncan, Baltimore man-on-the-street updates us. The only people who've ever tried to help me have not been the same race as me. People the same race as me have only ever tried to tear me down.

    Hr2  More on helicopter parenting...

Looking at the transgender issue from a new age perspective via an interview between Michelle Skeen, PsyD and her guest Aleya Dao, energetic healer. Did she just say that they just needed a little spiritual healing?

U.S. State Department denies Visas for persecuted Assyrian Christians who are being slaughtered. But Muslims are welcomed in mass. Why is that?

Hr3  Joe's Dad, Joe Messina, Sr., a Massachusetts Democrat (?), talks about current MA politics, Syrian refugees, Europe, Cuba, and Obama.

MA folks don't want 10,000 Syrian refugees.

There is no longer a deterrent for tyrants and terror in Europe with the US abdicating leadership.

Thoughts on returning Gitmo to Cuba...

College campus wimps can't handle anyone with a difference of opinion. Instead of conversing, they want people silenced, removed, suspended, or fired. Carol Swain, professor at Vanderbilt University is getting the full force of this intolerance with a student attempting to ruin her livelihood. This is what it looks like when college kids exercise their 1st Amendment right to free speech in an attempt to squelch someone else's free speech.

Have you had your healthy dose of reality lately?

Music Spotlight: The Rough Guide to Highlife Music - DJ kwasi africa

    in Music

One of the finest collections of classic higlife music. with host Dj kwasi africa.  The album is available for download via iTunes & amazon.

Highlife is a music genre that originated in Ghana at the turn of the 20th century and incorporated the traditional harmonic 9th, as well as melodic and the main rhythmic structures in traditional Akan music, and married them with Western instruments. Highlife was associated with the local African aristocracy during the colonial period. By 1930s, Highlife spread to Sierra Leone, Liberia, Gambia and Nigeria via Ghanaian workers, amongst other West African countries, where the music is now very popular.

Highlife is characterised by jazzy horns and multiple guitars which lead the band. Recently it has acquired an uptempo, synth-driven sound (see Daddy Lumba). Igbo highlife and Joromi are subgenres.

This arpeggiated highlife guitar part is modeled after an Afro-Cuban guajeo. The pattern of attack-points is nearly identical to the 3-2 clave motif guajeo as shown below. The bell pattern known in Cuba as clave is indigenous to Ghana and Nigeria, and is used in highlife.
