Ask MomRN Show - Organ Donation, Loving the Pregnant You

    in Family

Every ten minutes another person is added to the waiting list for an organ transplant, but a new survey shows that even though many people are in favor of organ donation, they aren't registering. Professional snowboarder Chris Klug knows firsthand about the need for organ donation. He's the first-ever organ transplant recipient to earn a bronze medal and he joins us now along with David Fleming, CEO of Donate Life America, to discuss the need for organ donation and the latest survey results.
Have you ever heard of the term “Burn to Learn”? Research shows that when students eat healthy and are more physically active, they do better in school. With the help of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—known as CDC—communities nationwide are putting this research into practice, year-round. Annie Lionberger, Senior Manager of Student Wellness in the Office of Student Health and Wellness at Chicago Public Schools, tells us how we can all chip in to help fight childhood obesity and get kids in our own hometown on track to improved health and better grades.
Amy Riley is the author of Loving the Pregnant You, a book for women who are thoughtfully creating their pregnancies. The book shares stories from a variety of women with different circumstances, and their approaches to pregnancy, to help readers find inspiration and ideas that will uniquely work for them.

Attitude of Africans towards Blood and Organ Donation

    in Health

What is the Attitude of Africans towards Blood and Organ Donation?

One of the major threats to the future of health in African Communities is the severe lack of sufficient blood and organ donors.  Africans people are 4-5x more likely to need an organ transplant but less than 2% of people on most Health Service Organ Donor Registers are of African descent. The number is clearly exponential in Africa, where the condition is even grimmer.

A study finds that one of the reasons is that African donors are more likely to donate to family members, or other closely related recipients. Unlike people of European descent who were are likely to be unrelated to the recipients of their organs. Organ donation is still a taboo in some discussions from African, Asian, mixed race communities. Understanding why such discrepancies exist could help reduce concerns about organ donation and assist in the development of specialized encouragement strategies for new donors in the African communities.

It's natural to have questions or possibly concerns, and so we invite you to talk to our team in about what it means to become an organ donor. The more we can understand what contributes to people’s willingness to donate blood or organs, the better job we can do of educating potential living donors about the need and allay fears about the risks.

    in Health

An In-Depth discussion with Sigrid Fry-Revere, founder and CEO of Stop Organ Trafficking Now! This 501c non-profit, non-partisan agency is dedicated to removing barriers to living organ donation by communicating relevant scholarly research to Congress. SOTN! is lobbying Congress, to support living donors by removing financial disincentives that form often insurmountable barriers to Americans who wish to donate organs. Besides huge savings for Medicare, the proposed legislation could close the staggering kidney supply and demand gap, improve the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of Americans waiting for a kidney, strengthen the penalties for illegal organ trafficking, and help decrease exploitation in developing countries.

The efforts of Sigrid and her organization will have a great impact it donations of organs for those with kidney failur.
