What is being done to research and find the cause of these diseases? For that we ask Dr. Ellen Li.
Dr. Ellen Li, MD, PhD, a gastroenterologist and research scientist, is Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Dr. Li oversees the clinical, research and training of a Division that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive tract and liver.
Dr. Li’s major research interest is on defining the role of the gut microbiome in digestive diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel diseases, colon cancer, and functional GI disorders (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome). Since coming to Stony Brook in 2009, Ellen has launched an interdepartmental Digestive Diseases Biobanking Core, with the generous support of the Simons Foundation, that will provide an infrastructure that encourages collaborations between clinicians and basic scientists in conducting clinical translational research.She is the author of 77 peer-reviewed articles and several chapters in the Textbook of Gastroenterology.

In this series, we shine the light on challenges that community members have shared. This episode is, “A Work Colleague Has Experienced A Tragic Death of A Loved One. What Should I Do?”
Life. Death is a reality for all of us. A tragic death (accident, homicide, suicide, etc.) is not. What do you do if a tragic death becomes a reality for a work colleague?
1) Be there.
If you have experienced a tragic death in your life you have an advantage (in some respects) when your work colleague experiences one in their lives. The compassion, empathy and understanding that a tragic death survivor is able to provide to another person is an asset.
The natural aversion to the colleague (from people who have not experienced a real life tragic death themselves) is understandable at some level. We all hear about tragic death. It is on the news. It is in our media in film, music, poetry, video games, etc., yet that is an abstract awareness devoid of the devastation of the actual child, spouse, friend, boss, parent, partner, that we know who is gone.
The most ‘helpful’ things you should do, I repeat:
1) Be there.
I learned about these types of situations when my only sibling committed suicide.
With a tragic death there are also the extra issues to deal with in many instances of media inquires and coverage. This forces public attention on the survivors. In many instances it is the only public information about their loved one and it defines their entire life into often graphic and

Recap: Ludaday Weekend 2014 & Dragon Con Take over Atlanta
The 9th annual Ludaday Weekend 2014 was filled with a lot of activities across the city of Atlanta. There was celebrity bowling, a block party held at Georgia State and this years event ended with a celebrity basketball game with teams Disturbing tha Peace vs. Young Money Cash Money. I got an opportunity to attend the Ludaday weekend Day Party at Frank Ski restaurant and lounge which was major.
Dragon Con take over the ATL about 50,000 people from around the country came to Atlanta for this event. Hotels were filled and restaurants were packed. With all of the creatures and characters, it looked like something out a science fiction movie.
