Adults with intellectual or other developmental disabilities face a cascade of health disparities including, complex or difficult-to-treat medical conditions, difficulty accessing health care or expressing their symptoms and pain, or they may receive inadequate health care and receive little attention to wellness, preventive care, and health promotion.
The IDD Toolkit website is a resource for health care providers, individuals with disabilities, their families and support staff, to help lead to improvements in the health of adults with IDD across the nation.
Janet Shouse is the program coordinator for the Developmental Disabilities Health Care E-Toolkit at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. She is also the parent of three young adults, including one with autism. She has served with various disability-related organizations, including Autism Tennessee, the Disability Coalition on Education and the Tennessee Autism Summit Team.
Join The Arc of Luzerne County, host of PA Independent Living Radio Show, for an in-depth conversation with Janet - about the IDD Toolkit, its origins, and the difference it's making in healthcare for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the country. We'll also talk about her extensive career in service to the disability community and personal experiences as a mother of a son with autism.

In a culture that encourages and expects BUSY as a constant state of being, many have lost touch with how to STOP and truly rest.... even for a moment. In this episode we'll explore sacred stillness as a concept and delve into how my guest, Sonja Haller is experimenting with her own practice of sacred stillness in her blog project: 52 SABBATHS.
In her words, "I want to feel comfortable in my own skin. I want to feel more peace. I want to feel less anxiety. I’ve always wanted these things and one night I had a dream in which that small, wise voice told me to take a Sabbath. The voice was that of my editor who would blush if I told him I dreamed of him.
I took it as a sign.
Now whether this secular girl can find any of that in her experiment to experience 52 Sabbaths with all the dedication mustered in an overstuffed life remains to be seen. But I’m forecasting that at the very least I will have found a deeper connection with something, someone or myself.

In order to maintain privacy and confidentiality, there are rules of access to Electronic Health Records (EHR) that can sometimes present barriers to delivering the best care.
Tracy Zervakis and her daughter recently had quite an adventure trying to get the right medicine at the right time, and ran into several roadblocks imposed by the access rules around EHR at her hospital.
While it sounds like a good idea to restrict access to those with a "need to know," in practice it sometimes get in the way. Perhaps we need to re-think those rules, not only for the events in a peaceful day at the office, but also in an emergency.
Joyce and Mike speak with Tracy about her adventure and about ideas for improving the flow of medical information to patients, to emergency personnel, and to all those who really do "need to know" in order to deliver the right care at the right time.
Bob McGrath, a Teaneck songwriter and actor who appeared on Sesame Street for more than 40 years and who was recently named a Bergen County “Legend” will be our guest on Record Talk Radio at 10 a.m. Friday.
Record Reporter Lindy Washburn also will be on the broadcast to talk about her recent three-part series on the sweeping changes that have resulted to health care in New Jersey as private-for-profit companies acquire local struggling non-profit hospitals.
McGrath was one of ten people – ranging from Indian Chief Oratam to the late actor James Gandolfini – who were named by the Bergen County Historical Society as their first group of Bergen County legends. The society plans to honor them during an Oct. 15 fund-raiser in Garfield.
Washburn’s series “The For-Profit Prescription” looked at the profound changes that have occurred at six former non-profit hospitals in New Jersey that are now run by health care entrepreneurs and investors.

Welcome to Bill Martinez Live, hosted by an unapologetic AMERICAN U.S. Marine of Mexican descent who knows why people come to America but demands that immigrants come through the front door and that the rule of law is respected. Bill Martinez Live waves just one flag and has no use for hyphenated hearts torn between the 4th of July and some other foreign flag. We put the United States over party politics and broadcasting our unstinting praise of this great land to 250 American cities through CRN, BML syndication and the ever popular Blog Talk Radio platform.
Republicans & Democrats have lost a grasp on life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for ALL Americans. Bill Martinez Live helps us regain it. Listen in to the show to hear every facet of the issues but keep your eye on God and the exceptionalism to which he has urged on America and its people.
