It's one of those times in America when it's hard to just act like everything is normal. So while we are going to have our show, and continue with the normal things we do (reviewing and previewing NY hip hop events, delivering a few new releases of note), we'd be remiss in our duties if we didn't address and speak on the issues of the day.
As such, we'll start with a discussion about an artist "town hall" meeting we attended in Harlem, addressing police brutality against the minority community. We hope to have some of New York's hip hop activists, including folks like Rebel Diaz, who traveled to Ferguson during the height of the protests, and we'll happily take your calls on the subject.
It's an important time, and hip hop does have a part to play in these issues. We'll be here to talk about it with you.
Tune in, and call up. We know your voice is important.

Well, the mystery of Your Old Droog has come to a close.
Or has it?
The mysterious MC, who many have insisted is a personification of an intricate wool-over-your-eyes plot by legendary lyricist Nas, has seemingly emerged as his own man. Two items have been released, just ahead of the Brooklyn upstart's "debut" performance, September 3 at Webster Hall.
The videos, one a well-produced in-studio session alongside long-time NYC producer DJ Skizz, and another, a casual freestyle caught in a darkened club, both make for a compelling argument that Your Old Droog is NOT Nas.
But there are those who are STILL not convinced.
Our hosts Manny Faces and Steve Ortiz are on opposite sides of the fence. Listen to them argue it out, and CALL IN with your thoughts.
Also joining us, one of our favorite aritsts, Likwuid! She'll be calling in to talk about her long-awaited, 2 Hungry Bros-produced EP, "Likwuidity: In Depth," featuring folks like DJ Evil Dee, Dylan Dili and Meredith Hansen of the Metropolitan opera(!).
As usual, we'll review and preview some great NY-area hip hop events, and drop some new releases you should know about.

The long-awaited-by-some return of NY rapstress Remy Ma after serving a moderately long prison sentence, had the rap world buzzing, even if a bit premature, thanks to irrespnsible "reporting" by some of hip hop's loudest mouthpieces. Her return was punctuated by a quick freestyle assist by DJ Khaled, the inevitable "Is she going to do anything of value?" and "What does this mean for Nicki Minaj?" discussions.
The combination of all thes things lead us to tonight's initial topics:
1. Can Remy Ma make any headway in today's rap landscape?
2. Why do so many people who are praising her return, have to disparage current rap queen Nicki Minaj at the same time? What is it about the rap audience that has a problem with there being MULTIPLE successful artists at one time, particularly female?
3. But if we're going to compare, let's analyze the freestyle by Remy and the verse of Beyonce's Flawless remix that Nicki Minaj dropped almost simultaneously, and what both releases might mean to both artists.
4. (I'm sure we'll slip in some snark at the irresponsible "hip hop media" who once again, carry on as if spreading misinformation to millions of people ain't no big thing.)
5. As always, event reviews and previews and some new, noteworthy NY rap releases as well.
Join us live. Call in with your thoughts. We expect this to be a heated discussion, and we're looking forward to your input.

New York hip hop is once again buzzing loudly, with the recent explosive rise of Brooklyn's Bobby Shmurda. Thanks to the power of the meme, his #ShmoneyDance and the song it was derived from, exploded across social media in the past few weeks, culminating with an "epic" record deal signing.
However, with this meteoric rise, comes plenty of opinions. Many are surprised that such a sudden, possibly flash-in-the-pan artist could (or shoud) literally take over the hip hop industry. What does this say for the integrity of the artform, they ask, when someone can get signed and wildly promoted off of the success of a Vine clip?
On the other hand, many point to Bobby Shmurda as a great example of how a NY-based rap artist should rise to fame... through a make-music-for-my-block-and-the-rest-will-follow attitude, a strong local movement, a catchy song, charisma and well-timed co-signs by outside influencers.
Some will worry that the imagery on display in "Hot Ni**a" is adding to an already violent rap music landscape, and will inspire many more copycats seeking to follow in his footsteps.
Others will remind us that it isn't the music creating the environement, it is the environment creating the music.
We're going to welcome several individuals with diverse opinions on tonight's episode, and invite callers to give their opinion on Bobby Shmurda.
We'll also be speaking with Mikal Amin Lee, aka Hired Gun, an artist, educator and global hip hop representative about his organization Urban Word NYC, and their current fundraising campaign to continue utilizing hip hop as an inspirational teaching tool.
Lastly, we'll preview a slew of great, new NY rap releases we think you should know about.
