Meet the first African American Stewardess hired by Delta Air Lines in1966 !
In all of the stories about aviation and its history, the stories of the first African American stewardesses have been left untold and unknown. We first took to the skies when flying was glamorous and exclusive and little girls dreamt of being stewadesses, models, or movie stars. We rubbed elbows with the elite and we traveled the world when few others could. We flew as pioneers in a global society long before the time of the Internet and globalization. We also kept our heads high facing down racial prejudice and discrimination. We lived as Stars in the Sky
Patricia Grace Murphy was the first African American Stewardess to break the color barrier for Delta Air Lines. Pat's stories and other pioneers in aviation are featured in my book Stars in the Sky which will be released in November. Visit the archives to hear the show and listen to my call in guest Terry Taylor another African American Stewardess featured in my book, exchange stories with Pat about the early years of flying. We were also honored to have Pat's first supervisior, June Huerman share some stories about those turbulent days and assisting Pat with her new life in aviation.
Please listen each week for updates on my book, or visit my website www.theflygirl10.com

Josey Milner is part small town teen, part road-worthy country starlet, and at only 17 years old, she turned heads and changed hearts with her debut US single, “Not Pretty Enough.” The song thrust Josey into the country music spotlight, launching her anti-bullying campaign with Angels and Doves, earning her a 2013 Independent Country Music Award nomination for Promising Young Artist, a Top 10 Hottest New Artist designation, and a Number One single on the world’s first independent country music chart, Indie World. Now, 18 and a recent Magna Cum Laude high school graduate, Josey has taken her initial successes to greater heights with “Cowgirls.”
“Cowgirls” was recorded at Awestruck Studios with her “Not Pretty Enough” production team of Micah Burdick and Matthew Russo (Hall and Oates.) Mastering engineer, Larry Gann (John Rich, Elton John) also played drums on the track, with Jimmy Mattingly (Dolly Parton, Reba, Garth) on fiddle and Smith Curry (Jason Aldean, Randy Travis) on pedal steel. The single was released to country radio in November 2013, and it reached #1 on the New Music Weekly country charts and Top 75 on Music Row! “Cowgirls” is a boot-kicking, foot stomping dance anthem that has country radio fans

American Vernacular presents Black Man Down: The Killing of Michael Brown and the Souls of Black People. This episode takes an unflinching look at the spike in killings of unarmed Black men and women by police in America, the public's indifference to it and the rising cost of it to taxpayers. Does this emotional disconnect highlight a different form of racism in Anglo-Americans that runs far deeper than we're willing to admit and how does a civilized society overcome that? We will also discuss the militarization of police departments, including the use of drones on American citizens, and what this potentially means to your righs under the U.S Constitution. Tune in and join the conversation at 619-768-2924
