The Source360, New York Hip Hop Updates, Upcoming Events and more

    in Music

The Source360 weekend "festival" hit Brooklyn this weekend, and the big highlight was the Wu-Tang reunion concert at Barclays Center. Not sure what else it might have accomplished, but we'll be discussing festivals, and the influence of magazines like The Source.

Since we've been known to talk a bit about the state of New York's hip hop radio, we'll chat a bit about Hot 97's new Music Director, and what that might or might not mean for the station.

Of course, we'll talk about general happenings in and around New York City's hip hop scene, recap a few shows including hip hop at the famous Blue Note Jazz Cafe and a one-man show (well, two technically) that blends hip hop, spoken word, music, humor... ah man, this show just has everything!

Ron Killings (aka R-Truth), plus NY hip hop news, recaps & more

    in Hip Hop Music

On tonight's episode, we welcome Ron Killings, also known as WWE wrestler R-Truth, to The NY Hip Hop Report. In town for the 2015 SummerSlam being held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Ron Killings is also promoting the release of his new single, "What Cha Do To Get It?" as well as his upcoming album.

If you watch the WWE, you'll know that Ron Killings, as R-Truth, is known for rapping his own entry into the ring with the crowd favorite, "What's Up!." But Ron is not your typical athlete-who-decided-to-try-his-hand-at-music. We hear that music was Ron's first love, and he had to be talked into entering the wrestling game!

Also, we're joined by Brooklyn's own Jadon, who recently beat out a nation's worth of contenders as part of the Jack Daniel's "Jack'N For Beats" MC competition, copping a $10,000 prize and a studio session with DJ Khaled.

We're excited to hear from these world-class champions and hear about their ventures in music and more, and of course as always, we'll also bring you other New York hip hop news, event previews and take YOUR CALLS thoughout the night!

Sean Price Remembered, Taking YOUR Calls, plus NY Hip Hop Event Recaps & more

    in Hip Hop Music

The hip hop world received another shock this weekend, as news spread about the passing of veteran rap artist Sean Price. The Brooklyn rap heavyweight has been making braggadocious, clever, hard-hitting music as a member of Boot Camp Clik's Heltah Skeltah, with Black Milk & Guilty Simpson as Random Axe, and as a successful solo artist. The Duck Down Music representative reportedly passed away in his sleep on Saturday, August 8, 2015.

RIP Pumpkinhead, plus Props to Hip Hop and Rhymes & Designs

    in Hip Hop Music

The independent hip hop community lost a veteran MC and, by all accounts, a genuinely cool cat this week, as word spread that Brooklyn-based battle vet PH fka Pumpkinhead passed away. Social media quickly and feverishly spread word of the family man's passing, as countless members of the hip hop world, from New York and around the world, expressed shock and sadness.

We'll talk about the life and career of the fiery BK spitter, and plan to hear from some who know him directly.

We'll also hear from Illspokinn and Tru Statement Entertainment, who are back with another in their amazing event series, Props To Hip Hop. The live-band driven tribute series features tons of pro MCs jumping on the mic to pay homage to hip hop's most iconic entertainers.

We'll also speak with the folks from RhymesandDesigns.com, who have brought an interesting angle to the hip hop clothing business, blending fashion and technology.

These guests, other recent hip hop news, opinion and as always, YOUR CALLS, live on The NY Hip Hop Report with Manny Faces.

Is Gentrification Killing New York's Hip Hop Soul?

    in Hip Hop Music

Year three of The NY Hip Hop Report on BlogTalkRadio kicks off with this important, and polarizing topic. In our three years covering, discussing and receiving your insight on the New York-area's thriving, progressive hip hop musical and cultural scene, we can't help but to notice the elephant in the room: Gentrification.

The influx of outsiders moving into the five boroughs, changing neighborhoods, iconic New York establishments disappearing, skyrocketing rents and the continued focus by the industry and media on hip hop from other areas of the country, have all cast a shadow over the independent hip hop communities in New York.

We'll discuss whether or not New York's hip hop soul has been damaged by these changing times, and what can be done to ensure that the legacy, both from the past and from the highly progressive current landscape, remains strong and protected.

PLUS: Queens' Top $ Raz will be on the check in, discussing his new project, REGULAR BLACK!

As usual, new release information, local hip hop news, fundraiser of the week and YOUR CALLS!

This episode of The NY Hip Hop Report is brought to you by Doin' It In The Park, a free hip hop and soul park jam, going down Sunday, June 21 at Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
