The Neonicotinoid View - Coalition against Bayer Dangers

    in Environment

Bees are important pollinators which play a vital role in many diverse ecosystems. Food security is highly dependent on the activity of bees and other pollinating insects. Neonicotinoids are systemic chemicals that spread from the seed throughout the plant and disrupt the nervous system of any insect which comes into contact. The neurotoxins travel into the pollen and the nectar and can poison beneficial insects such as bees. Estimations for the LD 50 lie between 3 and 50 ng/bee. That means that 50% of the bees which consume 3-50 ng of the pesticide, all die. At even lower, sub-lethal, doses these compounds can cause bees to become disoriented, without directly killing the insect. Bees which cannot return to their hive will soon die.
The Coalition against BAYER (CBGNetwork or CBG) has launched a campaign asking the Bayer company for a total ban of neonicotinoid pesticides. According to CBG’s campaign, “Bayer managers have known the risks which neonicotinoid pesticides create for the environment since the early 1990s. The company downplayed the risks, submitted deficient studies to authorities and viewed the massive decline of honey bees and pollinators in many parts of the world as 'collateral damage'.”
In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer, and special guest host, Tom Theobald, talk to Philipp Mimkes, a physicist who has been working fulltime with the Coalition for the last 18 years. We will discuss the CBG’s Campaign To Ban Neonicotinoids and their most recent efforts. Stay tuned!

Reducing Exposure to Toxic Chemicals – Natural Pest Control

    in Health

Many of us grew up having our homes sprayed with bug control products and pesticides.  However, are bug sprays and chemicals the way to go?  Yes, it may be true that we don’t want to live with bugs like cockroaches in our homes, but have you ever thought about how toxic pest control products are?  And is there a less toxic, greener alternative?  Diane Brandon is joined this week by Louise Hodges, Founder of Greenbug All Natural Pest Control Products.  Ms. Hodges became concerned about the toxicity of most pest control products, which tend to be neurotoxins, and she decided to do something about it.  She shares with us how we can rid our homes of pests such as cockroaches and not worry about endangering our health or that of our families and pets.

There's lead and a whole bunch of other stuff in your lipstick that you should know about.

    in Environment

Join us for a special "Lipstick Lunch & Learn" and discover how the cosmetics industry is allowed to put anything they want in your cosmetics and personal care products. Known carcinogens, neurotoxins and lead are all found in American's cosmetics and personal care products and even though Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand have legally banned the worst offenders, a majority of American Cosmetics companies have taken a stand against reform. Find out how you can help the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics work towards a more open and toxin free cosmetics industry as we talk with Mia Davis, Organizing Director for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
