  • Life Lessons with Gaines Baty regarding his Dad...Buryl Baty

    in Lifestyle

In a nutshell, the author, Gaines Baty, is a Dallas-area CEO and former all-conference football player at Texas Tech.  Several years ago, he began doing some research to write a book about the dad he never really got an opportunity to know -- All-American Texas A&M QB Buryl Baty.  Long story short, Baty was an all-everything quarterback and local hero who left A&M to serve in WWII.  He came back after the war in Europe, re-enrolled, won big, was drafted by the NFL's Detroit Lions, shunned professional football and chose instead to coach at an impoverished school (Bowie High) in El Paso. There, he took a group of Mexican American kids who'd never won a thing or really been fought for in any way (Baty took a real stand against some deep-seated bigotry before anything like a civil rights movement began) and not only greatly shaped their character, but led them to multiple championships.  Then, just as they were preparing to win a third, he was killed in an auto accident on a scouting trip. He was 30 years old (a few of the many pics we have are below).  Gaines was just three.

50 years later, Gaines embarked on a journey to get to know his dad and tell his story.  He interviewed dozens of his former players (who say he completely changed their lives and the course of destiny for their families for generations) and those he played against (he was a contemporary of guys like the legendary Doak Walker and Tom Landry and played them toe to toe.  Hall of Fame coach Raymond Berry says, in fact, that Baty was the best back he ever coached).  Sept.15 -- Oct. 15 being Hispanic Heritage Month, btw, and the ongoing immigration debate makes what he did all the more relevant.
The book comes highly recommended by the likes of Roger Staubach

    Parents Rights and Vaccination

    in Christianity

Big Question: Should Parents Have The Right To Refuse Vaccines For Their Children?

The Anti-Vaccine Generation: How Movement Against Shots Got Its Start

Mistrust and misinformation give a shot in the arm to measles vaccine naysayers.

By Laura Parker , National Geographic

    PUBLISHED Fri Feb 06 16:03:00 EST 2015

You could call New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul members of the "vax generation."

Born in 1962 and 1963, respectively, they were in grade school when the newly developed measles vaccine became the life-saving advance that protected millions from a highly contagious childhood disease. Though not as scary as polio, it was potent enough to strike four million kids, hospitalize 48,000 of them with complications, and kill more than 400 every year.

That both men stoked an anti-vax movement this week by suggesting in the middle of a national measles outbreak that parents should be allowed to choose whether to vaccinate their children speaks to a generational shift in thinking about science and politics. Parents should have "some measure of choice" in vaccinating their children, Christie told a reporter, while Paul called the decision not to vaccinate "an issue of freedom."

Rev 6:12  And I beheld when he had opened the SIXTH SEAL, and, lo, there was a GREAT EARTHQUAKE; and the SUN became BLACK as sackcloth of hair, and the MOON became as BLOOD; (Revelation 16:12-21)  13  And the STARS of the heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.  14  And the heaven departed as a SCROLL when it is rolled together; and every MOUNTAIN and ISLAND were shaken out of their places.  15  And the KINGS OF THE EARTH, and the GREAT MEN, and the RICH MEN, and the CHIEF CAPTAINS, and the POWERFUL MEN, and every BONDMAN, and every FREE MAN, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; (Isaiah 24:1-<10-16>-<23-25:1-3>-10)    16  And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and HIDE US from the FACE of him that sits on the THRONE, from the WRATH OF THE LAMB: (Revelation 19:11-21, Numbers 24:14-<17-19)   17  For the GREAT DAY of HIS WRATH is come; and WHO shall be able to STAND?
