On May 21st, 2014 all Interstate Commercial Drivers and Motor Carriers will be required to begin using an examiner listed in the National Registry Of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) to obtain or renew their Medical Examiner's Certificate.
As a new program from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), it will require all physicans who perform physical examinations on CDL drivers to be trained and certified on the FMCSA standards, guidelines and regulations according to 49 CFR §391.41 (Physical Qualifications for Drivers).
The requirements are found in part §391.41 and §391.43 and the FMCSA has stated that they are on target for reaching its goal of 40,000 Certified Medical Examiners (CME) by the compliance date.
Elaine M. Papp, RN, MSN, COHN-S CM, Division Chief for the FMCSA Office of Medical Programs joins us as our special guest to discuss what the new program will mean for CDL drivers and motor carriers.

Mike and Joyce chat about the adventure of going outside your comfort zone for medical care.
Joyce has been hosting a family from a village on the west coast of Ecuador who are in Boston to get life-saving heart surgery for their son. Not only have they traveled a great distance, but Boston has very different weather than the tropical weather of Ecuador, the food is entirely different, and they don't speak any English.
They also chat about some of the highlights of the shows of 2014, and foreshadow next week's Christmas week show about considering clinical trials, and the resources that are available to assist you in finding and joining clinical trials that might be helpful in your situation.
Many thanks for listening in 2014, we hope you enjoy next week's show, and that you will be with us in 2015, happy and in good health.
Be well, and be a Powerful Patient.
Maurice A. Barboza is the founder and CEO of National Mall Liberty Fund DC, a non-profit authorized by Public Law 112-239 to establish a memorial to African American contributions to liberty during the Revolutionary War. In September 2014, Public Law 113-176 made the National Liberty Memorial eligible for a site in Washington's Monumental Core. He said, "this memorial will remind Americans that it was their vision for America that prevailed."
Mr. Barboza has written opinion pieces and spoken extensively about the 30-year quest to construct the memorial and his aunt's trail-blazing battle in the mid-1980s for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. A 2013 book, "Sacrificing Soldiers on the National Mall," by Kristin Haas, and a recent article in the Washington Post, "After 30 years, a site for memorial," by Tom Jackman, tell the story.

Sharon, formally with AMMJC, has been a patient's rights advocate for four years and has been at the front lines of this controversial issue. Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia have passed medical marijuana laws legalizing the use and production of Medical marijuana for qualifying patients. It is time for the lawmakers to let the people vote and decide what medicine they use to treat their illnesses. We will also have progressive news you can use, and the most important thing-You.
