William Still was the Black abolitionist from Philadelphia who was described by the New York Times as "The Father of the Underground Railroad". He commissioned Harriet Tubman's rescue missions. This famous abolitionist literally wrote the Underground Railroad book. The book which explained the story, narratives often in the words of the participants in the effort to escape slavery.

Episode 259: The Islamic State - rise & world view, with Craig Whiteside

    in Military

The Islamic State, ISIL/ISIS/Daesh - whatever people may call them - are not a flash in the pan. Not quite insurgency, not quiet terrorist organization, not quite nation state - what they are is a presence that has resilience, trans-national support, and has a long range plan.

What is their background, how have they evolved, and how do they view the world?

Our guest for the full hour to discuss this and more will be Craig Whiteside, LTC USA (Ret.), Associate Professor of Theater Security Decision Making for the Naval War College Monterey at the Naval Postgraduate School. Craig came to the War College from Washington State University, where he was a PhD student in Political Science and taught American Government and National Security Affairs. Prior to returning to school, Professor Whiteside was a career infantry officer in the U.S. Army with service in the airborne infantry. He is an Iraq war veteran and served with the Geronimos of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry in Iskandariyah as the battalion executive officer during 2006-7. He finished his military service as the Professor of Military Science at Washington State. Professor Whiteside is currently working on his dissertation investigating the political worldview of the Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS). He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

The Author Chat Show with Lynda D. Brown

    in Books

Today, I have Pastor Bradley Johnson of Being Perfected Ministries.  He's going to chat with me about the untimely death of his infant son, and a revised book, Divorcing the Old Me, due out in 2015

    About the ministry:

Tragedy struck Bradley and his wife  on March 10, 2014 when in the 5th month of Quiana’s, Bradley's wife, first pregnancy, her cervix opened unexpectedly and their son Nehemiah was born prematurely at home and died. The most devastating experience of this powerful couple’s life, they have chosen to press forward, with broken hearts, and honor Nehemiah’s legacy by telling others that in their darkest hour, Jesus is still faithful and not the cause, but the solution to any heartache. The couple went as far as to share their testimony on social media via a You Tube video only weeks after their son’s death; about their process of healing and full details of the events surrounding Nehemiah’s death to encourage other people that have experienced a similar tragedy.

INTERVIEW WITH GROUND BREAKING RAP DUO KIN4LIFE @KIN4LIFE FOR The Hype Magazine

    in Music

Born and raised in Mt. Vernon, NY, a town known for its contribution to hip hop in the late 80s and early 90s, KIN4LIFE is determined to bring hip hop glory back to their hometown and respect back to their genre. As young entrepreneurs, they founded their label, Noriq Records in 2002. Under this imprint, they have released the album KIN4LIFE Volume I” and the EPs “Rock Star” and “I Love KIN4LIFE”. The video for the hit single “Make Up Girl” held a spot on the Click List Countdown on MTV’s Logo for 11 consecutive weeks, and was nominated for The Click List's Top 10 Videos of 2009 (http://tinyurl.com/atrt4f). In 2012, KIN4LIFE released “It’s Over Now”, the first single and video (http://tinyurl.com/8vhhapt ) from their new album “Money Brings Trouble” scheduled for release in  2013.

KIN4LIFE admits that their first love is emceeing, but their production and songwriting skills makes them a hot commodity behind the scenes. Working with the hottest up and coming hip hop and R&B acts, KIN4LIFE garnered comparison to Missy Elliot, prompting them to form Noriq Records’ subsidiaries, Red Eye Productions and The KIN Factory (writing and production)

In 2010, KIN4LIFE wrote and produced the single “Lone Ranger” in support of LGBTQ youth, and in response to the recent wave of bullying and attacks that have made national headlines. The track was released as a free download on Christmas Day and had 2000 downloads in the first 48 hours. KIN4LIFE has also been featured on the PBS Emmy winning series "In The Life: Defying Stereotypes" which they now screen at universities across the country as part of a diversity program for students and faculty.  Read The Full bio at http://www.kin4life.com/#!about/cb30
