WOMEN, PROTECTION ORDERS, AND THE REAL COSTS TO VICTIMS

You’ve experienced violence from your partner, and everyone is telling you to get a protection order. Sounds right. The legal aid representative tells you how to proceed, it might help, and it doesn’t cost anything. Or does it?

Two researchers looked at whether getting a protection order had any impact on women’s earnings, and their findings may be a shock. And those findings covered six years of women’s earnings. Free to get a protection order? Think again.

Melanie M. Hughes and Lisa D. Brush join us to look at their research and what it told them about women’s financial picture after getting a protection order. Hughes is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh. She uses quantitative approaches to study women’s empowerment, often focusing on groups of women who are particularly marginalized. She is coauthor of Women, Politics, and Power: A Global Perspective (3rd Edition forthcoming with CQ Press). Her research has been published in journals such as American Sociological Review, American Political Science Review, and Social Forces.

Brush is Professor of Sociology and of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Her first book was Gender and Governance (Rowman and Littlefield 2003), and her second book was Poverty, Battered Women, and Work in U.S. Public Policy (Oxford University Press 2011). Her current research looks at preventing adolescent relationship abuse and teen dating violence by engaging high school and middle school boys in coached athletic programs to change masculinities.

  • The Parker J Cole Show -- America's Racial DNA

    in Entertainment

The media has brought to the forefront cases that have caused public outrage and concern. From the curious case of Trayvon Martin killed by George Zimmerman, Michael Brown gunned down as an unarmed felon, to the disturbing incidents surrounding the death of Sandra Bland, there is a definite rise in racial tensions across the United States as the media blares a giant searchlight on situations of African Americans in some sort of confrontation with a Caucasian.

When these incidents come into the public eye, they lead to an overarching question: "Why?" One black man made a very famous statement while being beaten by a group of police officers: "Can't we all just get along?" The statement has been taken seriously and at the same time, been made a parody. But the question, however one puts it remains. "Can't we all just get along?"

Is racism simply part of America's DNA -- what makes up this country? Is this just a thing we have to live with and accept? Will those who try to work to bring harmony on either side be ridiculed? Why can't we as a nation get past this? Why does it keep rearing its head?

Join in on the conversation with my returning guest Melissa Pellew as we try to tackle this issue and others surround the rise of racial tensions in our country. Call in 646-595-2083, press 1 to be live on air. Or, click on the link here: http://tobtr.com/s/7886747 Or, download the WLUV radio mobile app. Tune in

YVONNE CRAIG aka "BATGIRL" (1937-2015) MEMORIAL SHOW

    in Entertainment

In 1967, William Dozier, creator of the Batman television series, concerned that the show’s ratings were falling, decided to introduce a female character on the side of law & order in an attempt to attract new viewers. He came up with Batgirl, who would help Batman & Robin in their crusade against the malign forces of “guest villains”. For this role, on a par with the caped crusader & the boy wonder, Dozier cast Yvonne Craig. Although Craig, who has died at 78, had then been acting in films and television for a decade, Batgirl gave Yvonne her greatest fame.

The Dynamic Duo became the Tremendous Trio when Craig first appeared in Enter Batgirl, Exit Penguin, aired on 14 September 1967, the start of the 3rd & last season. As Barbara, the librarian daughter of Commissioner Gordon, she's kidnapped by the Penguin, who bullies her into agreeing to marry him. However, unknown to everyone except Alfred, the faithful butler of the billionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne, Barbara has a secret crime-fighting identity. Inevitably, she escapes from the Penguin, & rescues the astonished Batman & Robin, who have been hopelessly strung up in the Penguin’s lair. Dressed in a tight-fitting purple and yellow bat outfit with pointy ears, & riding a purple, lace-trimmed motor Batcycle, Craig, playing it straight, immediately entered into the campy, satiric tone of the series. She was also able to match her two co-stars in the self-defence department, accompanied by such onomatopoeic on-screen graphics as POW!, WHAM! and CRR-ASH!.

“I think that they ultimately chose me because of my ballet background,” Craig recalled. “Though they didn’t want me to do my own stunts, I finally talked them into it.”

Join Richard with his special guest host, Robert Amberry, president of the Yvonne Craig Appreciation Society, in this special tribute to Yvonne and her career.
