Experiencing a Profound God Moment w/ Essence Magazine Journalist Janelle Harris

    in Motivation

A writer since she won a crisp dollar bill in an elementary school essay contest, Janelle Harris uses her platform as a storyteller to explore the diasporic experiences, challenges and diversities of Black people, particularly Black women, whom she loves fiercely. As a journalist and blogger, her work has appeared in more than 40 publications, including Essence, Ebony, Vibe, Uptown, Clutch, The Root, The Grio, Yahoo, Jezebel and The Huffington Post. As an editor and communications consultant, she has shaped content that reframes played out narratives and equitably discusses communities underrepresented in mainstream media.

Harris is owner and wordsmithing mastermind of The Write or Die Chick, a boutique editorial services agency based in Washington, DC, where she stands in the creative gap for clients to develop copy that celebrates, engages and speaks to women. She posts weekly about Black women’s issues on her blog of the same name at Essence.com and has appeared as a speaker and subject matter expert on radio shows, Twitter chats, discussion panels and other platforms. In 2013, Harris founded SheScribes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Black women and girls embrace the healing, restorative power of writing and storytelling. She leads day-long workshops and weekly sessions on journaling, poetry, creative fiction, journalism and vision writing. She’s also an instructor, both online and in classrooms, who has helped aspiring writers better understand the fine art of freelancing. Harris is the mother of a dynamic 16-year-old daughter, Skylar, a proud alumna of Lincoln University in Pennsylvaniaand is finishing her master’s degree in African-American studies at Temple University. A perfect day in her world include: 75 degree weather, Frankie Beverly on repeat, a used book sale and a meal at Panda Express.

  • In Short Order -- Dr. Sylvia Lafair

    in Health

Sylvia Lafair, Ph.D. is President of Creative Energy Options, Inc. (CEO), a global consulting company that
targets and transforms workplace patterns for success. Sylvia has hiked the Inca Trail into Machu Picchu, has eaten indiscernible stew in the Amazon, and bungee jumped in New Zealand. When she lands long enough, she writes books, gives speeches, and leads seminars. Sylvia, ever the pioneer, retooled her skills as a noted family therapist to become a leadership expert and executive coach. In the workplace she helps teams find the sweet spot of cooperation and productivity.

Dr. Lafair’s programs and executive coaching helps decrease conflict and increase cooperation in the workplace. Her award winning book ‘Don’t Bring It to Work’ (Jossey-Bass 2009) is listed as one of the top nine books for every boss to read; one of the top twenty books for emerging leaders, and has won ten awards nationally and internationally.

Dr. Lafair’s research shows that, much as we like to believe that our behavior is entirely rational, our thoughts and actions are often driven by the roles we learned in our families as children for safety and survival. Under pressure, we tend to revert to old patterns, often creating workplace drama that diverts attention from business and undermines productivity.

Other award winning books are: ‘GUTSY: How Women Leaders Make Change,’ (earning six book awards), and Dr. Lafair’s newest book, ‘UNIQUE: How Story Sparks Diversity, Inclusion, and Engagement’ (with two book awards to date and counting).

    2015 Hawaii football preview

    in Sports

Jeremy and Chris are back for the fourth installment of us previewing each Mountain West team. This week we bring on Chris Turner to discuss what is in store for Hawaii for the upcoming year. The Warriors were close in a lot of games last year so the hope is that the multiple single digit loses will turn into wins this year.

Hawaii does seem to have some stability at the quarterback position with USC quarterback Max Wittek under center, but the loss of running back Joey Iosefa might be hard to replace. The schedule isn't exactly easy with non-conference games against Colorado, Ohio State and Wisconsin.

RAP IT UP LIVE with Pastor A.F. Riggins

    in Social Networking

Tonight I will be interviewing Houston's very own Marion Theresa Myers, author of the newly released book Ghetto's Forgotten Daughters. Don't miss it. Call in to (347) 855-8118 to hear her amazing story and to discuss the issues facing women today...this is a book that you must have in your library.

This book will take you through a journey of a young girl’s quest of self-discovery. It has taught her a great deal about herself—even throughout her womanhood. She was able to learn that she could no longer allow life’s tragedies to hold her captive. Those things almost destroyed her to the point where she wanted to take her own life. Everything that tried to break her made her into the vibrant, loving and strong woman she is today. And none of her wounds of yesteryear even matters because GOD has truly set her free! She is no longer a Victim! She is a Victor! And her wish for everyone reading this book is to become a Victor too! Allow this writing to speak to your spirit through scriptures and through the openness of revealing her life for what it was and more importantly what it has become. Hoping to encourage others to move beyond many life situations and circumstances to a better tomorrow…
