TheSoulFM Has A One on One With The Legendary Najee

    in Music

With three platinum and five gold albums, Najee is one of the pioneers of what is commonly known as Contemporary Jazz. A combination of jazz improvisation and R&B, this genre forms a bridge from the jazz fusion of the 70s to the jazz pop of the mid 80s.

A native of Jamaica, Queens, New York, Najee shared all of his musical dreams-and later, many professional gigs-with his brother Fareed, a guitarist who was a year younger. Their father passed away when they were very young, but their mother encouraged a deep exposure to jazz via recordings by artists as diverse as the Miles Davis Quintet, Junior Walker and Mongo Santamaria. Najee showed an early interest in the sax but a grammar school teacher steered him towards clarinet when there were no sax chairs available in the school band.

Najee, along with his brother Fareed, attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston with a concentrated study in performance and composition.

Najee left the Conservatory after three years and moved back to New York, where he immersed himself in the club scene. One night when he was out playing straight ahead jazz, Lesette Wilson, keyboardist and musical director of Chaka Khan-who was hot at the time with her trademark hit “Ain’t Nobody”-came in and loved what she heard. She called him to audition for the singer’s upcoming tour, and in no time Najee found himself on the road for a year with the legendary diva, playing alto sax and flute. Najee’s good fortune transferred to Fareed’s career as well when Chaka’s longtime guitarist Tony Maiden failed to show up for a rehearsal. Fareed plugged in and was hired to play alongside Maiden for the tour.

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Najee!

    in Music

"I am always evolving" - the words of our next guest, the beloved Najee, will echo in your head as a reminder of what we ALL should resolve to do in 2014.

Born in New York City, Najee developed a love for Jazz early.  He could hardly help it!  He heard the music of Miles Davis and other Greats in his home - first in Greenwich Village, then Jamaica - where the streets offered more sounds that will infiltrtate his soul.  And mark his passage for his life's mission.

His first inclinations were toward the flute and the TENOR saxophone - but his brother, Fareed, persuaded Najee to play Soprano.  He definitely had inspirations: Coltrane, Parker, Lateef and Laws.  The best of Sax and Flute.  Those leanings would gain him favor at The New England Conservatory, where he studied with George Russell and Jaki Byard.  Other mentors: Jazz giants Frank Foster and Jimmy Heath - plus Harold Jones of the New York Philharmonic.

In the early 80's, Chaka Khan gave Najee a job - and set the course in motion for an amazing career.  1986: what a way to start your recording history - call the project, "Najee's Theme." :-D   Freddie Jackson was impressed - so were more who hired this artist of multiple talents - one of those key figures was Prince.  Between 2001 and 2003, Najee was side-by-side with Pop's legendary star - and was featured on two of his albums.

The touring as leader or as sideman, the journeys to Africa, the rich experiences with other beloved artists with vision - like George Duke - have had an impact on the deliberately versatile Najee.  He is an award-winning talent for a reason.  His 15th studio album - second for Shanachie Entertainment - certainly drives that home!  "The Morning After: A Musical Love Journey" - will be shared with you - as well as MORE good news from Najee - on 1/7/2014 :)
