Mark Harris -- Collage, photography and printmaking

Mark Hosts his SF Open Studios on two weekends -- Oct. 18 and 19 as well as on Oct. 25 and 26

Mark Harris makes exceptional use of color in his paintings. He has a keen eye and the ability to create strong, beautiful, contemporary images. Mark has exhibited at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, CA, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art in Novato, CA, and  the California Modern Gallery in San Francisco, CA, just to name a few.  The University of Chile purchased a painting for the school of Agriculture and became the first institutional collector of Harris’ work.

    Ron Moultrie Saunders -- Photography

Ron Moultrie Saunders creates photograms:  photographs that are made without the use of a camera.  This 19th Century process has an immediacy, rawness and truth that is not found in images created with a camera.  Ron layers natural and man-made elements such as water, plants and rope on the surface of silver-based photographic paper.  The paper is exposed to light from an enlarger to create a shadowy silhouette image.  Then, Ron lays other images on top of the photo paper and makes another exposure, which results in a collage effect.

The Best of Everything /Beyond Scared Straight L.T. Teron Hayes

    in Entertainment

The scene is from an episode of A&E cable television network’s show “Beyond Scared Straight” which highlights a Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office program overseen by Moultrie native Lt. Terron Hayes. The one-hour show airs at 10 p.m. tonight.

Hayes, 37, a former Colquitt County Packer football player in the early 1990s, has headed up the department’s Crime Prevention and Interdiction Unit since 2009. The department has several programs geared toward keeping or putting youths back on the right path, including a “scared straight” element that puts them in a real jail for four to 24 hours.

Not every youth steered toward the program gets the full treatment from inmates, who help out in hopes of keeping young people from making the mistakes they did. Of the 2,000 or so students Hayes interacts with every year, most of them he sees for a discussion in his office or during a summer program at schools. About 200 may have interventions of some sort during the year.
