Talking Motorcycles with David Aldana and Brian Slark

    in Sports

Talking Motorcycles proudly presents another episode as a part of our AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Series.

David Aldana, 1999 Hall of Fame inductee, became famous early in his career for his "all or nothing" mentality as a professional motorcycle racer. He was a rookie expert in AMA Grand National competition in 1970. He went on to place 3rd in the Championship winning three Grand Nationals along the way. In total, David won 4 Grand Nationals in his flat track career. He competed in nearly every form of motorcycle racing including motocross and road racing. During his road racing career he was a factory rider for Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda. In 1981 he teamed up with Mike Baldwin to win the SUZUKA 8 Hour Endurance Race in front of 10's of thousands of fans. Suzuka was at that time, one of the most prestigious road races in the world and the one race everyone wanted to win. Known for his black leathers with the white skeleton outline in the front, Aldana was and continues to be a fan favorite world wide.

Brian Slark, 2012 Hall of Fame inductee, was one of the people who gets credit for the creation of motocross in America. He was at one time the importer of the Rickman Metisse. Brian assisted Hall of Famer, Dave Mungenast in the creation of a vintage motorcycle museum in St. Louis. He then helped create the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Leeds, Alabama. Today Barber is considered the premier vintage motorcycle museum in the world and Brian oversees the restoration work in their shop as Technical Director. If you have a Clymer Service Manual published from 1971 through 1984, the teardown work was likely performed by Brian Slark.

Both of the legendary men will be on hand at the 16th annual Riding Into History event this weekend!

THE ROAD HAWGS RADIO NETWORK - CLASSIC CHROME / COMING HOME FOR THE  110th. STURGIS TO MILWAUKEE

Special Guests: Patrick Simmons, Musician, Collector, Vintage Bike Enthusias Cris Sommer Simmons, Author, Motor Maid, Vintage Bike Enthusiast

Many folks find it hard to take the time to really hit the road on their motorcycles. Work schedules and family obligations often get in the way. But what do you do if you find yourself touring with one of the biggest rock and roll bands in the world throughout most of the year, or writing award-winning books, and you need a motorcycle fix? This week, we are joined by friends of the program, Cannonball finishers, and serious motorcycle junkies Pat and Cris Simmons. When Pat isn’t hard at work touring with The Doobie Brothers and Cris finds herself a free moment from writing bestselling books, the two of them are on the lookout for their next motorcycle adventure. In 2013, the couple decided to celebrate the 110th Anniversary of Harley Davidson in a very special way; Pat and Cris hopped aboard their 1914 and 1915 Harley twins and rode from the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame in South Dakota to the Harley Davidson Museum in Wisconsin. Their trip went off without a hitch, and was a great way for the couple to spend time together.

THE ROAD HAWGS RADIO NETWORK - FREE ROAD REPORT / RETRO RALLY

    in Lifestyle

The first part of the show this week will take you back several decades to the time of hotrods, muscle cars, choppers, poodle skirts & Beehive Hairdos, blue jeans & white t shirts. The second part is about an event to benefit a wonderful charity that helps children with developmental disabilities achieve their highest level of independence.

Joining us will be the organizers for the May 30th Retro Rally in the College Hill District of Rock Island, IL to give you all the details of this family friendly FREE event featuring Vintage Cars & Bikes, Pinup Contest, Music, Vendors, Arts and Crafts, Food & Drink and all things RETRO and COOL.

Up next will be Dan Kost with the Quad Cities Motorcycle Rally and City Tour at the Hillcrest Event Center in Orion, IL on May 23. This FREE event to benefit the Children’s Therapy Center of the Quad Cities features a Pancake Breakfast, Exhibits, Bike Show, Vendors, Food, Local Fun Run (Free) Door Prizes, Biker Rodeo & More.

Dan stepped up and took the reins of what had been the largest Bi-State Motorcycle Awareness Ride in the Country. This was a free riding event to not just raise motorcycle awareness but to help out the Children’s Therapy Center of the Quad Cities until the local cities started to charge huge sums of money for the police escort. Having to cover the additional expense by charging riders was a deathblow for them. Fortunately Dan had gotten involved a couple of years ago and was there to keep it from going away for good. In order to keep this Motorcycle Awareness Ride going there would have to be some changes. The parade style continuous ride was changed to a continuous ride made up of small groups, thus avoiding the high cost of the police escort. The features and amenities the Hillcrest Event Center offers made expanding the ride into a motorcycle rally an easy decision.
