    Satan beguiles men now as he beguiled Eve in Eden by flattery, by kindling a desire to obtain forbidden knowledge, by exciting ambition for self-exaltation. It was cherishing these evils that caused his fall, and through them he aims to compass the ruin of men. "Ye shall be as gods," he declares, "knowing good and evil." Genesis 3:5. Spiritualism teaches "that man is the creature of progression; that it is his destiny from his birth to progress, even to eternity, toward the Godhead." And again: "Each mind will judge itself and not another." "The judgment will be right, because it is the judgment of self. . . . The throne is within you." Said a spiritualistic teacher, as the "spiritual consciousness" awoke within him: "My fellow men, all were unfallen demigods." And another declares: "Any just and perfect being is Christ."

    Thus, in place of the righteousness and perfection of the

    infinite God, the true object of adoration; in place of the perfect righteousness of His law, the true standard of human attainment, Satan has substituted the sinful, erring nature of man himself as the only object of adoration, the only rule of judgment, or standard of character. This is progress, not upward, but downward.

    It is a law both of the intellectual and the spiritual nature that by beholding we become changed. The mind gradually adapts itself to the subjects upon which it is allowed to dwell. It becomes assimilated to that which it is accustomed to love and reverence. Man will never rise higher than his standard of purity or goodness or truth. If self is his loftiest ideal, he will never attain to anything more exalted. Rather, he will constantly sink lower and lower. The grace of God alone has power to exalt man. Left to himself, his course must inevitably be downward.

    The Waldenses, John Wycliffe, Huss and Jerome, Martin Luther and Zwingli, Cranmer, Latimer, Knox, the Huguenots, John and Charles Wesley, and a host of others, brought to the foundation material that will endure throughout eternity. And those who have so nobly promoted the circulation of God’s Word and in heathen lands have prepared the way for the last great message—these also have helped to rear the structure. – {TT 312.1}

    We may look back through the centuries and see the living stones of which God’s temple is composed gleaming like jets of light through the darkness. Throughout eternity these precious jewels will shine with increasing luster, revealing the contrast between the gold of truth and the dross of error. – {TT 312.2}

    Peace comes with dependence on divine power. As fast as the soul resolves to act in accordance with the light given, the Holy Spirit gives more light and strength. The grace of the Spirit is supplied to co-operate with the soul’s resolve, but it is not a substitute for the individual exercise of faith. Success in the Christian life depends upon the appropriation of the light that God has given. It is not an abundance of light and evidence that makes the soul free in Christ; it is the rising of the powers and the will and the energies of the soul to cry out sincerely, “Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief.”

    Just as long as God has a church, he will have those who will cry aloud and spare not, who will be his instruments to REPROVE (Rebuke) selfishness and sins, and will not shun to DECLARE THE WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD, whether men will hear or forbear. I saw that individuals would rise up against the plain testimonies. It does not suit their natural feelings. THEY WOULD CHOOSE TO HAVE SMOOTH THINGS SPOKEN UNTO THEM, AND HAVE PEACE CRIED IN THEIR EARS. I VIEW THE CHURCH IN A MORE DANGEROUS CONDITION THAN THEY EVER HAVE BEEN. Experimental religion is known but by a few. THE SHAKING MUST SOON TAKE PLACE TO PURIFY THE CHURCH. SG, vol. 2, Pg. 284

    5 Key points to remember when studying or explaining the Spirit Of Prophecy! Advent Light Ministry Prayer Line , Upstate, NY 1844

    1) Do not by your criticisms take out all the force, all the point and power, from the Testimonies (Spirit Of Prophecy). 5 T 691.2

    2) Do not feel that YOU CAN dissect them TO SUIT YOUR OWN IDEAS, claiming that God has given you ability to discern what is light from heaven and what is the expression of mere human wisdom. 5 T 691.2

    3) IF THE TESTIMONIES SPEAK NOT ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF GOD, REJECT THEM. CHRIST AND BELIAL (Satan) CANNOT BE UNITED. 5 T 691.2

    4) For Christ's sake DO NOT CONFUSE the minds of the people with human sophistry (philosophy) and skepticism (doubt & unbelief), and make of none effect the work that the Lord would do. 5 T 691.2

    5) DO NOT, BY YOUR LACK OF SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT, MAKE OF THIS AGENCY OF GOD (SOP) A ROCK OF OFFENSE whereby many shall be caused to stumble and fall, “and be snared, and be taken.” 5 T 691.2

    A MORE SURE WORD OF PROPHECY

    That this admonition is addressed to the church in the last days is evident from the words pointing to the nearness of the Lord's coming: "For yet a little while, and He that shall come will come and will not tarry." And it is plainly implied that there would be a seeming delay and that the Lord would appear to tarry. The instruction here given is especially adapted to the experience of Adventists at this time. The people here addressed were in danger of making shipwreck of faith. They had done the will of God in following the guidance of His Spirit and His word; yet they could not understand His purpose in their past experience, nor could they discern the pathway before them, and they were tempted to doubt whether God had indeed been leading them. At this time the words were applicable: "Now the just shall live by faith." As the bright light of the "midnight cry" had shone upon their pathway, and they had seen the prophecies unsealed and the rapidly fulfilling signs telling that the coming of Christ was near, they had walked, as it were, by sight. But now, bowed down by disappointed hopes, they could stand only by faith in God and in His word. The scoffing world were saying: "You have been deceived. Give up your faith, and say that the advent movement was of Satan." But God's word declared: "If any man draw back, My soul shall have no pleasure in him." To renounce their faith now, and deny the power of the Holy Spirit which had attended the message, would be drawing back toward perdition. They were encouraged to steadfastness by the words of Paul: "Cast not away therefore your confidence;" "ye have need of patience," "for yet a little while, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry."

    A Beautiful Structure Herod's temple was a most beautiful structure. It was built of white marble covered with plates of gold, set on an eminence with steps leading up to it from every direction, constituting a series of terraces. It rose to a height of four hundred feet above the valley below and could be seen from a great distance. Josephus likens it to a snow-covered mountain. It was a thing of beauty, especially when seen from the Mount of Olives in the morning as the sun shone upon it. It was one of the wonders of the world. Herod's temple was the same size as Solomon's temple; that is, the building proper was about ninety feet in. length by thirty in width. The holy place was separated from the most holy by a partition about a foot and a half in thickness, with an opening before which hung the veil mentioned in Matthew 27:51, which was rent at the death of Jesus. There was no furniture in the most holy place, but only the stone Wt over from Zerubbabel's temple, upon which the high priest placed his censer on the Day of Atonement. The furniture in the holy place was probably the same at in Solomon's temple. Directly above the holy and the most holy were chambers or halls where the priests met on stated occasions. The Sanhedrin also met there for a time. In the end of the room above the most holy were trap doors through which a cage could be let down into the most holy place below. This cage was large enough to hold one or more of the workmen who at times were needed repair the temple.

    A MORE SURE WORD OF PROPHECY

    in Christianity

    The scripture which above all others had been both the foundation and the central pillar of the advent faith was the declaration: "Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." Daniel 8:14. These had been familiar words to all believers in the Lord's soon coming. By the lips of thousands was this prophecy repeated as the watchword of their faith. All felt that upon the events therein foretold depended their brightest expectations and most cherished hopes. These prophetic days had been shown to terminate in the autumn of 1844. In common with the rest of the Christian world, Adventists then held that the earth, or some portion of it, was the sanctuary. They understood that the cleansing of the sanctuary was the purification of the earth by the fires of the last great day, and that this would take place at the second advent. Hence the conclusion that Christ would return to the earth in 1844.

    But the appointed time had passed, and the Lord had not appeared. The believers knew that God's word could not fail; their interpretation of the prophecy must be at fault; but where was the mistake? Many rashly cut the knot of difficulty by denying that the 2300 days ended in 1844. No reason could be given for this except that Christ had not come at the time they expected Him. They argued that if the prophetic days had ended in 1844, Christ would then have returned to

    Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

    11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

    12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in highplaces.

    13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
