The Literary Showcase Featuring James Scott Bell

    in Writing

James Scott Bell is the award winning author of several novels of suspense and historical intrigue. His fiction has been compared by Booklist and the Los Angeles Times to Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, two of his favorite authors.  A former trial lawyer, Jim has also been the fiction columnist for Writers Digest Magazine and adjunct professor of writing at Pepperdine University. His book on writing, Write Great Fiction: Plot & Structure is one of the most popular writing books available today. Jim grew up in Los Angeles. “It’s my home,” he says. The sunset over the ocean, silhouette of palm trees against burnt orange sky, the mountains, the Hollywood Bowl on a warm summer evening. I guess I’m one of the few people who lives here who admits liking it.”  While still in college, Bell’s writing got him a spot to study with Raymond Carver, one of America’s most honored writers. Bell also won an award for a screenplay he wrote in his senior year. After graduation, Bell moved to New York to write for the theater. That phase included stints in several Off Broadway productions and in television commercials.  While in New York Bell met his wife to be, an actress, and decided one thespian in the family was enough. He went to the University of Sothern California Law School, graduated with honors and won the American Board of Trial Advocates’ Award as the top student in Trial Practice. He was a litigator for a year with a large L.A. firm before opening up his own office.  One day he and his wife went to the movies. They saw “Moonstruck,” and Bell decided he wanted to be a writer again, and wouldn’t stop, even if he never sold anything. He started with screenplays. After a couple of years and some options, he turned to fiction, and hasn’t turned away since.

Cancer: The Sentimental Nurturer or The Smotherer Buried in the Past?

    in Culture

BRAD KRONEN’S “WELCOME TO THE ZODIAC” SERIES
Cancer: The Sentimental Nurturer or The Smotherer Buried in the Past?

    Where: www.blogtalkradio.com
    When: Wednesday, June 17th @ 8PM PST

    “Is the mother gonna live?”
“No, She’s dying……but I can still hear her big mouth.”
    - Olympia Dukakis and Cher from the film, “Moonstruck” (Moon – get it?)

The Mother – A force which gives life to all and is one of the deadliest on earth when provoked.

We leave airy and all over the place Gemini and now go beaneath the oceanic depths to the sign of Cancer. Cancer is the first of the water signs but here we see that in “quality”, it now shares with Aries, the essence of being a “cardinal” sign. The cardinal signs are motivated to begin or start things, and for the Cancerian this is done maternally for either gender. For as in the animal kingdom where a mother of most species is motivated to go into action to either find or protect her home or offspring, the Cancerian will be motivated into action in regards to anything concerning their HOME or FAMILY. They are inherently maternal and will “Mommy” anyone whom they feel emotionally connected with and whether she be positive or negative, the mother of a Cancerian is one the most influential people in their life.

Add to the formula Cancer is ruled by the Moon and like the tides (or say a menstrual cycle?) their moods and emotions are ever changing so that at times that maternal energy can show up as either the most patriotic of citizens of any given “Mother-land” to…………..Norman Bates!

Cancer Fun Fact: Jupiter, the planet of luck, fortune and bounty is exalted in the sign of Cancer. Who better than Mom to share the wealth? Jupiter is at the height or most concentrated point of its exaltation at 15 degrees Cancer and the one person whom I encountered with a natal Jupiter in Cancer at 15 degrees was a woman who had inherited millions of dollars from, you guessed it, MOM!

So bring your bottle and blanky and tune in
