Tonight and the rest of this week we are going to discuss Cleavers NOTES ON NATIVE SON. In this we will discuss the theory of self hate and displaced love for those who are your enemy and enemy to the thought of a life of liberation for Black People. "After reading a couple of James Baldwin's books, I began experiencing that continuous delight one feels upon discovering a fascinating, brilliant talent on the scene, a talent capable of penetrating so profoundly into one's own little world that one knows oneself to have unalterably changed and liberated from the frustrating grasp of whatever Devils happen to process one. Being a Negro, I have found this to be a rare and infrequent experience, for few of my black brothers and sisters her in America have achieved the power, which James Baldwin calls his revenge, which outlast kingdoms: the power of doing whatever cats like Baldwin do when combining the alphabet with the with the volatile elements of his soul. (And, like it or not, a black man, unless he has become irretrievably "white-minded, " responds with additional dimension of his being to the articulated experience of another black---in spite of the universality of human experience.)
I as I imagine many others did and still do, lusted for any-thing that Baldwin had written. It would have been a gas for me to sit on a pillow beneath the womb of Baldwin's typewriter and catch each newborn page as it entered this world of ours. I was delighted that Baldwin, with those great big eyes of his, which one thought to be fixedly focused on the microcosm, could also pierce the microcosm. And although he was so full of sound, he was not noisy writer like Ralph Ellison. He placed so much of my own experience, which I thought I had understood, into new perspective." This One Step - Older Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse
Wednesdays we talk about finding support after breaking our silence.
Polly Moore grew up with six siblings in Mobile, Alabama, but was only 8 years old when her father died of lung cancer. Soon two neighborhood boys began to molest her, friends of her older twin brothers. A couple of years later she was assaulted by another neighbor and later by her older brother. She was able to break away from the abuse at the age of twelve, but was by then deep in the darkness of isolation. Polly is now a mother and grandmother, and has lived in Atlanta for the past 15 years. She is contemplating returning to finish her final year at Western Carolina University where she majored in Accounting, and has become a devoted advocate for adult survivors of Child Sexual Abuse.
She began her organization, This One Step, to help older survivors of Child Sexual Abuse deal with the trama of being part of what she has named, "The Unknown Generation" A generation of survivors who had nowhere to go for support. In her late teens she began writing as a coping mechanism to deal with the PTSD. Her three books, "Cider Blocks and Oven Racks", "Billy Wayne's Christmas Train" and "The Unknown Generation" will be available in early 2016. She has written many southern short stories which have been published in different publications. She is now hosting her own blogtalk radio show Monday through Friday beginning at 6:00am.
We will talk to Arminda Colon, Creator of Mycocreations.MyCoCreations is consciously creative company that exists to empower each of us while providing products that help you to live a healthier, happier life. When you contemplate the illustrious career of Harvey Mason, your mind HAS to be blown. Born and raised in Atlantic City, young Harvey absorbed the vibes of the great musicians THERE - and showed so much promise on drums that he was playing with Duke Ellington and Errol Garner in the 60's. Early in his recording career, there he was - up front and center with Blue Note Records. And on Columbia: Please go check out Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters for a refresher course in freshly fused Jazz :)
The associations that this consummate first-call musician has made through five decades is staggering. Because, quite simply, HE is. Nathan East has shared space and stages with The Mase for 25 years or so (Fourplay's "Silver" just dropped) and he firmly suggests that drummers of ANY note studied Harvey Mason in order to find their own style. He was THAT distinctive THAT early in his journey.
We dare you to find another legendary drummer who has been involved with more Gold and Platinum recording sessions than our guest. Awards, accolades, nods from NARAS and "Modern Drummer." Over 150 motion picture soundtracks. A regular fixture at the Oscars each year. And that long relationship with Fourplay cannot be stressed enough. When you're with a successful musical unit for 25 years, that's cause for celebration!
As bandmates Nathan, Chuck Loeb, Bob James, and Harvey prepare for a holiday run at the Blue Note in New York, our friend wanted to take the time - during this Thanksgiving week - to express his gratitude for all that his fans have given him. How beautiful that NEW fans and fellow artists got together for his album last year. And how wonderful that life-long "brothers" are banding together again right before Christmas. How fortunate are we to visit with Harvey again? You already KNOW :)
