Lucas was born in La Grange, North Carolina, and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was the son of Mahalee (née Jones 1909-2003) and Fred Lucas. He claims that the incident that sparked his motivation to embark on a life of crime was witnessing his 12-year-old cousin's murder at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan, for apparently "reckless eyeballing" (looking at) a Caucasian woman, in Greensboro. He drifted through a life of petty crime until one particular occasion when, after a fight with a former employer, he fled to New York on the advice of his mother. In Harlem, he indulged in petty crime and pool hustling before he was taken under the wing of gangster Bumpy Johnson. Lucas' connection to Johnson has since come under some doubt; he claimed to have been Johnson's driver for 15 years, although Johnson spent just five years out of prison before his death in 1968. According to Johnson's widow, much of the narrative that Lucas claims as his actually belonged to another young hustler named Zach Walker, who lived with Johnson and his family and later betrayed him.

TD&KS Episode 230: Thanksgiving FriendsGiving with musical guest Franki Dennull

    in Comedy

It is our Thanksgiving kick off show and we are celebrating it FriendGiving style with our friends that have been guests on our show over the year are stopping by for some food and fun.

All the regular Dereck and Kay you love, with Weird News and Hot Topics.

    Plus musical guest Franki Dennull.

You don’t want to miss this 2 hour special!!!

Franki Dennull has been using the name PURPOSE as a band and cause, since 1978. Though the players have changed, PURPOSE remains, as PURPOSE FOR LIFE. "We are all called to a purpose, and ours is to make music that, not only pleases the ear, but blesses the soul," says Franki. It has been said that Franki's songs paint panoramic pictures in your mind, leaving an indelible impression on your heart.

When Franki and Wendy Dennull started making music together in 1991, it was a forgone conclusion that their harmonies were a winning combination.  Described as Beatle-esque classic Rock and blues, with a strong Christian message, Franki's writing and vocal style has been compared to John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, while still retaining his own unique style. Shine On Records is proud to feature Franki's song "Butterfly" as our label's first release and look forward to many more great songs in the future from this dynamic Singer/Songwriter. His new single released on the 15th of November.
