From parents, to students, to administrators, teachers and policy makers, teachers around the country call out the real issues behind today’s declining U.S. education system. In pursuit of answers and solutions, educators will provide an in-depth analysis and insightful perspectives on the factors and variables that determine a student’s future.
Hosts Tammy Gaitor and Rodney Jordan look at each piece of the educational puzzle: from a cultural disconnect among teachers and students, to standardized testing, ineffective educational policies, inadequate administrators and most importantly, perspectives from “on the ground” soldiers in the battle for educational equality.
Backed with hands-on experience and keen insights, Gaitor and Jordan conclude that America’s educational system is in a state of crisis; and, unless significant actions are taken, the system will continue to rapidly decline.

Tonight's special guest is Mary E Graziano from Hamilton, Ontario, a child abuse survivor and member of the NAASCA family. Mary is Assistant Director at Abuse Survivors and Victims United, where she's been pairing up her poetry with the work of artist Michal Madison. She describes herself as an independent advocate for child abuse. She's very active in sometimes "secret" groups on Facebook and a member of Protecting Canadian Children and a member and volunteered at Butterfly Dreams Abuse and Recovery. Ms Graziano is a writer / poet / blogger, writing poetry about child abuse and trying to transmit the message that child abuse is wrong, stressing that we as adults need to be the voices for those who can't speak, the abused and traumatized child-victims. Her BLOG (http://www.nippercats.blogspot.com) is about her own child abuse. She says, "I started writing back in 2008, but now as a survivor I write about children in general." Mary works in an elementary school, assisting in the classroom with a teacher, and is an Educational Assistant for children with special needs. Mary writes, "Helping them do their work, teaching them skills they will need later in life. I have been doing this job for 25 years." and this is showing up as a new job, sorry about that everyone.
For this episode of Conversations in the Zone, I have the privilege to chat with Susan Moreno, a contemporary abstract artist based in Atlanta, GA. Susan attended The Art Institute of Chicago and The Atlanta College of Art where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art in 1987. Susan is an award-winning artist whose work has appeared in numerous juried shows including the Decatur Fine Arts Exhibition at The Dalton Gallery at Agnes Scott College. Her collectors include, The Bank of Atlanta, Decatur Arts Alliance, as well as, private collectors in Atlanta and Arizona. Susan grew up in Florida and was around water for much of her formative years. These early memories of water and movement are the foundation for her present work, as she pours paint on canvas and wood. The idea of unrestricted movement and liquidity are her primary concerns. She uses sand and charcoal to add texture and associations of earthiness to her images.
With over 25 years of experience Susan has entertained professionally in the Atlanta area, as well as out of state with caricatures. Over the years Susan has drawn countless caricatures for corporate events such as conventions, trade-shows, employee and customer appreciation, wedding receptions and much more.
Her client list includes Atlanta Magazine, PYA Monarch, Greystone Power, Georgia Power, AT & T, Delta, Coke, Georgia Power, just to name a few. For more information about Susan and the work she loves, visit www.susanmoreno.com, caricaturesbysusan.com or digitalcaricaturesatlanta.com.
