SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Tracy Baxter, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. The institution commonly known as "Child Protective Services" has operated in an almost untouchable position in North America for decades, as if it was "above the law". To speak out against CPS was to risk losing your children, your family, your career, and in some cases your freedom, as retaliation was quick and vicious. Thankfully, there has been a recent turn in public opinion due to media exposure, precedent-setting lawsuits, ground breaking documentaries and people refusing to be silenced. Slowly, the Courts are starting to hold CPS agencies responsible for their illegal actions and abuses." We'll speak to the producer and director of 'Hope Stripped Bare', Tom Sutherland and cameraman Linley Redford, whose documentary is about the CPS system in North America. We will also be speaking with attorney and advocate Nanine McCool, executive director of Bridge to Justice Foundation, who fought to expose injustice in Family Court. We'll also have a former CPS worker who is willing to speak out about just how deep and how prevalent the corruption of these agencies is. ~~ Every two weeks a new THEME will be presented in this series, with frequent special guests speaking from their own experience. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/ForOurKids or write to: firstname.lastname@example.org

Tonight's special guest is Donna (Dee) Wood from West Virginia, a verbal abuse survivor (as both a child and adult) who says she would be honored to tell her story in the hope she could help others. The devastating effects of the abuse lasted for over forty years, through most of her life. The trauma she endured through her mother’s husband brought a partial amnesia. She writes, "I lived on a small farm in a remote part of southern West Virginia. I was a very introverted child, extremely fearful of strangers." Her mother's husband, who she and her brother always called by his first name, Quentin (never Daddy or Dad), had an intense dislike of people. She goes on, "He never talked to us, unless it was to criticize, intimidate or inflict some form of verbal abuse." He sometimes administered severe belt beatings, beyond the necessary punishable offence, if it indeed was an offense. Her childhood trauma led to a difficult life. But Dee's on a better path now. "If I had known that the problems in my life were due to a term referred to as child abuse earlier in my life," she says, "and if I'd received the appropriate counseling and therapy, then my life would have been much easier and better. Yet, I believe if I had not gone through the trauma of those years I would not be the person I am today." Now she's a person who is more accepting, compassionate and understanding of others who have suffered and still suffer from different types of abuse. "I thank the Lord Almighty for answering my prayers to be whole," Dee writes. "I am still recovering, but I feel a lot more whole today."

Tonight's special guest is Penny Booth-Johnson from St Croix Falls, Wisconsin, a survivor and activist who's joining us for the first time. Among other things, she's been involved in "Million March Against Child Abuse," a Nationwide effort to bring voices together in making an impact, being a voice for our children. Penny explains, "My memories go back as far as probably before I was 2, being picked up and thrown into canning jars. I have enough scars on my head and you could draw a road map across country on my scalp." She goes on, "My mother was the abuser. Everyone knew, but no one stood up. Years of her abuse had taken a toll on not only my body but my mind." For a number of years, Penny had been what she calls "a keyboard advocate" sharing very little of herself and hiding behind a computer screen. Recovering from a stroke and news of a brain tumor got her into action. "I knew I had to do something, and determined I was going to become an advocate that was no longer going to hide behind my screen. In September of 2013, I contacted "Million March Against Child Abuse" and became a Lead Coordinator for St. Croix Falls WI, and held my first Walk against Child Abuse April 5th 2014." She concludes, "I'm ready to tell my story. Yesterday I lived in shame of my scars. Today I soar past them to tell other peoples stories, to be a voice. I thank you for this opportunity, and I only pray that when I have the opportunity to tell MY story it will help others come forwards and erase the stigma of shame and we can continue to grow for our future generation."

Tonight's special guest is Amber (O'Neill) Thornton from Albany, New York, a child abuse survivor and activist who's putting together "A Well Kept Secret," a book of anonymous survivor stories meant to raise awareness about child abuse. She says, "I was abused sexually, physically, and emotional by my father. My first memory of it was at five years old. I turned him in at 11 years old. I've been in counseling on and off and had a brief stay in Four Winds. I am currently in school for criminal justice, working from home for a family law attorney, caring for my two boys, and working on this book. The goal of the book is to wake a lot of people up to the fact that very little is being done to protect children from abuse. I have been in and out of family court fighting for custody of my six year old." Because of her experience she has a mission, "My goal is to write a book that will make people aware of what children go through. People don't seem to realize how little is actually done when abuse is reported. I was abused for 9 years of my childhood. Child protective services expects to be able to tell in one visit whether or not a child is in a safe home. They were in my home multiple times and left me with a monster. Currently I am locating other survivors to interview about their experiences and their thoughts and feelings as they went through them." She goes on, ""I can't change the world if no one reads the book but I truly want to do this right and reach as many people as possible." Survivors who are willing to share their story anonymously can reach her at email@example.com

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "Child Abuse, Trauma and 12-Step Recovery" - STEP 3 (and we'll include a bit about TRADITION 3) - SCAN host Bill Murray will be joined by special guest co-host Rivka Edery, MSW, LCSW, author of the book “Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide." Bill founded the recently launched Adult Survivors of Child Abuse Anonymous (ASCAA). Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 3: "Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to care of God, as we understood Him." You have worked Steps One and Two with a safe and trusted person – you have surrendered and you have demonstrated your willingness to try a new approach to your life experiences. When you admit your powerlessness over your traumatic history, you learn a comforting and critical truth: that you experienced certain painful life events that you absolutely could not have controlled. You were also not always in control of the coping patterns that have emerged. For some survivors, this can be a frightening and humbling experience. ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery is grateful for the spiritual recovery she found in the 12 Steps of AA. She's been active in the 12 Step community for over 17 years. Bill Murray credits his 30 plus years of recovery to the spiritual power of the 12 Step program, too. ~~ Join us every two weeks to further examine a 12 Step approach to recovery from abuse. Next show we'll address STEP 4 & TRADITION 4. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/Trauma-12Step or write to Rivka at: firstname.lastname@example.org

Tonight's special guest is Amy Crohn from New York, a returning NAASCA family member who's a survivor of child abuse, and an accomplished marketing communications, business development professional, writer and journalist. Her book "Dying To Live" explains how childhood maltreatment can lead to adult physical illness. As a youngster Amy was subjected to emotional abuse and neglect. A very nervous child, she was quite often sick, and missed a lot of grade school. Amy became very ill at age 20 with mononucleosis and decided then and there that she was not going to let the first 18 years of her life dictate the rest of it. She writes, "I pushed everything inside. But at at age 36, she continues, "I couldn't hide from my past anymore .. I literally had to die to live" (see book). Amy explains, "While writing my book, I learned of The ACE Study (Adverse Childhood Experiences Study) and took the ACE survey. With a high score of 8, I am convinced that my early childhood traumas caused my adult physical illness." Today, after the suicide of her brother eight months ago, she is feeling the effects of PTSD once again. She goes on, "The early childhood abuse simply does not prepare one for the challenges of life." Amy has recently been trained as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and, in fact, adopted one foster child in 2000. She says, "It is my hope that I can help educate physicians to include The ACE survey questions in their patient intake questionnaires and, as a CASA, to help interrupt a pattern that may lead to illness later in life." Be sure to check out Amy's BLOG
