    in Self Help

This is an OPEN TOPIC or "open mike" night. Call in! Pick any issues, topics or subjects you'd like to discuss. Join our founder and host, Bill Murray, and his co-hosts, panelists and guests, many of them abuse survivors, others supporters, National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse family members and friends, for an informed 90 minute discussion of the many important issues that surround child abuse .. where community call-in participation is always welcome! Wearing a Blue Ribbon is the symbol of Child Abuse Awareness! Millions of abuse victims (men and women) hide the story of their experience well into adulthood. A huge number continue to suffer from pain, anger, fear, shame and embarrassment for decades. Most will agree their traumas have resulted in an inability to trust, make good decisions and have healthy relationships. But giving up the secret is often how recovery begins, one survivor talking to another. ~~ Please see our web site at: www.NAASCA.org

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1014

    in Self Help

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "Child Abuse, Trauma and 12-Step Recovery" - STEP 4 - SCAN host Bill Murray will be joined by special guest co-host Rivka Edery, MSW, LCSW, from NYC, author of the book “Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide." Bill founded the recently launched Adult Survivors of Child Abuse Anonymous (ASCAA). Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 4: "Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves." Most survivors, unless they are in a crisis, do not put much thought into what happened; the people, places, things, and reactions to events that have long-shaped their life. But if you have not yet taken a look at the traumas that have shaped your personality, behaviors, fears, and ways of responding in life, Step Four is a good opportunity to stop and think about it. Perhaps you have reached the day when you realize that you are not living your life as you really want to. Perhaps you feel a deep inner longing for healthy, secure attachment, love and a more kind relationship with yourself. ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery is grateful for the spiritual recovery she found in the 12 Steps of AA. She's been active in the 12 Step community for over 17 years. Bill Murray credits his 30 plus years of recovery to the spiritual power of the 12 Step program, too. ~~ Join us every two weeks to further examine a 12 Step approach to recovery from abuse. Next show we'll address STEP 5. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/Trauma-12Step or write to Rivka at: rebecca.edery@gmail.com

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1011

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Mandy Smith from Portland, Oregon, a child abuse survivor, activist and writer. Her "Healing Beyond Survival" BLOG is excellent. As she says, "Any way that I can help spread awareness about abuse, count me in!" To this end she's reaching out to others, and joining the NAASCA family. But advocating for abuse victims wasn't Mandy's orginal goal. "Three years ago, I started out with a plan to write a story," she says, "a personal story about my childhood sexual abuse and it’s aftermath. By the time I had finished the first draft of my memoir, "Secrets In Big Sky Country" (due to be published in Sept 2015), I became aware that it wasn't just my story. There were many others out there with similar stories of abuse." Beginning at age three, Mandy was groomed and molested by her stepfather, the man whom she called "Daddy." At 14, when she broke the family's code of silence, she was shunned. As a young girl her search for acceptance led Mandy down a dark path where she incurred more abuse. When a brutal rape results in pregnancy, the deep love she felt for her unborn baby surprised Mandy. Plans took shape quickly for their new life together. Then, one final act of deception and betrayal by her parents sent Mandy into a four-decade-long abyss of depression, eating disorders and PTSD. But now she says, "My forthcoming memoir is the story of childhood abuse, betrayal and abandonment. But it doesn't end there. My journey has led me to a place of healing beyond survival. I especially hope that adults who were molested as children will read it and know they are not alone. I know that together, we can overcome the shame that comes from secret-keeping. Recovery and healing is possible!"

SPECIAL TOPIC Night -"For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Tracy Baxter, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. Tonight's TOPIC: With the rampant corruption, racketeering, and utter lawlessness of our legal system and all it's related players, is there any defense they can possibly give to explain the "Kangaroo Court" situation we find ourselves in when sucked into the vortex of misery and destruction that is our system? Is it indefensible or could there actually be a reason for why it is the way it is? Join us as we speak on this topic with people who have been down this rabbit hole. We will explore how and why things got to where they are today with a brand new perspective, as well as speaking with someone who is part of a 110 million dollar lawsuit against the judiciary to try and force change and accountability with the only means they seem to understand - money. We will also be updating you on the Marcky Herrmann case, which only grows more urgent and more corrupt by the day. It's time we speak up and stop the slaughtering of our civil rights. ~~ Every two weeks a new THEME will be presented in this series, with frequent special guests speaking from their own experience. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/ForOurKids or write to: naasca.forourkids@gmail.com

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1010

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Jeanette Allison from Monterey, CA, who suffered neglect and emotional abuse at the hands of her mother, a raging and mean alcoholic with Bipolar disorder, a sadistic and narcissistic personality who suffered from a schizoaffective disorder with paranoia. Jeanette's father was the enabler in the family. He worked three jobs to support the family of four. Her mother targeted her specifically, not her more compliant brother. Until recently Jeanette was a single mother and an LGBT activist. She had problems with alcohol in the past and successfully broke free of those problems through the help of AA's 12 Step program which she still practices on a daily basis, targeting the spiritual malady that lead her to drink in the first place. Although AA has been the solution to her alcoholism, she found no relief for trauma she suffered and carried with her from childhood. This is changing now as Jeanette found an answer to addressing unhealed maladies when she learned of Rivka Edery's book "Trauma and Transformation: A 12 Step Guide" and NAASCA's every other Thursday night "Stop Child Abuse Now" radio talk series that's devoted to the application of a 12 Step Program and approach to recovery the trauma of childhood abuse. Jeanette continues to be a shining light, despite suffering from a traumatic work accident, and a rare hand tumor that have halted her dream job as an occupational therapist. As such has a special interest in individuals with disabilities. She married her wife, Jackie Allison, this summer, and strives to be a leader who use her compassion, her kindness and the love of writing and photography to heal others' hearts.

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1008

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Tamra Gregory from Littleton, Colorado, a child abuse survivor, parent and activist who we met recently through NAASCA family member Feather Berkower, also from Colorado. Now middle aged, Tamra was a victim of sexual assaults occurred between the ages of 8 and 12, by family members and a swimming instructor. She reports, "I have been in and out of therapy both individual and group beginning in my 20's through my 40's. In retrospect, a very difficult divorce, my 2nd, was a pivotal event in my healing. The pain of this divorce dislodged me from the anger stage of grief. I think I had been stuck there for 40 plus years." She began telling her story to close friends. While was working on her MPA and enrolled in an emotional intelligence course, Tamra was required to write a bio. It was another opportunity to share her story (with 26 other people) and reap the support that occurs when one takes the risk to be vulnerable and authentic. "I have never confronted my abusers," she says, "but I have shared my story with other family members and although they have expressed sympathy for me, none have really taken a stance in opposition of them." Tamra goes on, "Needless to say, I do not engage with any of them now. The sad part for me is missing all of the family gatherings and missing seeing my extended family." A firm believer in Feather Berkower's work, her Parenting Safe Children web site and her book "Off Limits: A Parent's Guide to Keeping Kids Safe from Sexual Abuse," Tamra is busy giving back. "I spend my personal time volunteering with groups that provide mentor-ship and support for kids in the foster care system."
